Hydropower is electricity generated
using the energy of moving water

In 1882 , the world's first

hydroelectric plant began operating
in the United States in Appleton ,
Wisconsin.
A classic power plant is a system that consists of
three parts: a power plant where electricity is
produced ; a dam that can be opened and closed
to control the flow of water ; and a reservoir that
can store water.
The amount of electricity that can be generated
depends on how far the water comes and the
amount of it that moves through the system .
Electricity can be transported by electrical long
cables to homes, factories and businesses.

The water behind the dam flows

through an inlet and presses against
the turbine blades , causing them to
move . The turbine spins a generator
to produce electricity.
Hydropower provides nearly a fifth of
electricity worldwide
The largest hydroelectric plant in the
United States is next to the Grand
Coulee Dam in the northern state of
Washington. More than 70 percent of
the electricity produced in this state
comes from hydroelectric plants.
