MARTENSITIC STAINLESS STEEL

Characteristic
Similar to low alloy or carbon steels, having a
structure similar to the ferritic stainless steel.
Main alloying element is chromium (12 15%),
molybdenum (0.2 1%), carbon (0.1 1.2%) and
no nickel.
Body-centered tetragonal structure.
MARTENSITIC STAINLESS STEEL

Characteristic
Due the addition of carbon, they can be hardened
and strengthened by heat treatment.
Capable of developing a martensitic structure after
heat treatment (austhenitizing and quenching) and
cold work.
Martensite gives steel great hardness, but it also
reduces its toughness and makes it brittle, so few
steels are fully hardened.
MARTENSITIC STAINLESS STEEL
Properties
Magnetic properties
Hardenable by heat treatment
High strength and hardness (the highest strength
among the stainless steel)
Its high hardness due to a hard martensitic matrix and
to the presence of a large concentration of primary
carbides
Corrosion resistance of this steel is relatively poor
compared to the ferritic and austenitic type.
Good ductility
MARTENSITIC STAINLESS STEEL
Martensitic stainless steel are also known as Chromium Steel.
