WHAT IS FASHION
Fashion is the accepted day to day way of dressing at
a given time. If you see everyone wearing the same
colour or style when they have not been trend
before, such is in-fashion.
Fashion is the total outlook of an individual of today
and only for today. Though fashion evolves and some
styles come back, it only apply for now. Even the
retro fashion is never the same.
WHAT IS FASHION CYCLE
Fashion Cycle- a period of time
or life span during which the
fashion exists, moving through
the live stages from
introduction through
obsolescence.
When a customer purchases
and wears a certain style that
style is considered accepted.
The acceptance leads to the
style becoming a fashion!
Fashions DO NOT always survive
from year to year.
STAGES OF FASHION CYCLE
Fashion moves through
different stages during its cycle
of existence.
Not only design but special
features also go through a cycle
such as color, texture and fabric.
Introduction.
1. Rise stage.
2. Peak stage.
3. Decline stage.
4. Obsolescence.
FASHION MOVEMENT
Fashion movement-the ongoing
motion of fashions moving through
the fashion cycle.
Economic and social factors
influence consumer interest in
fashion.
Fibers and fabrics.
Advertising techniques can cause
consumers to change in fashion.
THEORIES OF FASHION MOVEMENT

Trickle-Down Theory
Trickle-Up Theory
Trickle-Across Theory

Each theory focuses on a

different set of fashion leaders.
TRICKLE DOWN THEORY
A hypothesis that states the
movement of fashion starts at
the top with consumers of
higher socioeconomic status
and moves down to the general
public.
The oldest and most accepted
theory of fashion change.
TRICKLE UP THEORY
A hypothesis that states the
movement of fashion starts with
consumers on lower-income levels
and then moves to consumers with
higher incomes.
Athletic Apparel Style-during the
1970s and 1980s.
Hair Style-Beatles
Punk Styles.
TRICKLE ACROSS THEORY
A hypothesis stating that
fashion acceptance begins
among several socioeconomic
classes at the same time,
because there are fashion
leaders in all groups.
1970s

The 70s saw glamour like none other and are still called the most fashionable years of Bollywood.

ZEENAT AMAN

Former Miss Asia Pacific, Zeenat Aman changed the rules of how the Bollywood actresses used to
be conservatively dressed through brave costuming in her films. She was the one who started the
trend for beauty pageants winners to choose Bollywood films as their next step of fame.
THE HIPPY TREND

The large red bindi, winged eyeliner, tinted shades, orange kurtas and rudraksh beads around the neck
became a huge part of who Zeenat Aman was.

Her bohemian look of floral and geometric prints is still rocking this seasons runway. Even the
accessories take inspiration from Janices large gold hoops and tinted frames.
Flared high waist pants and an overall hippy style of dressing was made popular during that time because of
the ease in which Zeenat Aman carried these styles.

HEAD GEAR

She also popularized headgears like the contrasting one she wore in Ali Baba Aur Chalis Chor.
Bandanas was her favourite accessory, which added quirkiness to her looks. She also liked to wear it
off screen. Her headband in the film Samraat added a charm to her evening gown. Women started
following her style after the release of the film.
Zeenat sure loved her bandanas. Like her other favourites, this too was another quirk inher stylish
wardrobe. In fact, she loved them so much that she was spotted wearing them off-screen too. Her
headband look in Samraata dded oomph to that classy black and silver gown as well as to her casual
attires.

The bandanas help glam girls today to get the retro look. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan donned it in Action
Replayy and so did Deepika Padukone in Om Shanti Om. While Katrina Kaif looked young and cute in
them in Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani
JUMPSUITS AND CHOKERS

Jumpsuits are in vogue these days, but the first heroine to wear a Jumpsuit Palazzo was Zeenat Aman in
the song Chura Liya Hai Tumne in the movie Yaadon Ki Baraat.

Who does not remember that white body suit palazzo in the evergreen song Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil
Toh.Considered as one of her most memorable looks, Zeenat Aman carried the outfit with elan.

The choker look was first adorned by the contemporary actress Zeenat Aman in the 1973s film Yadoon ki
Baarat.

Choker trend has become the forefront of the fashion industry today and one can see it everywhere.

Top Bollywood actresses like Sonam Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Jacqueline Fernandez, have all been
working the choker of late.
BELL BOTTOM PANTS

Bell-bottoms were a rage in the youth of 1970s and took the whole country by storm. The credit for the
fashion style goes to the movie Hare Rama Hare Krishna starring Zeenat Aman, Mumtaz and Dev
Anand. These bell-bottoms were complimented by pairing them up with oversized glasses. This completed
a retro look for you. The trend was followed for a long time, captivating youngsters tirelessly.
PARVEEN BABI

Bollywood's controversy child, Babi lived a long and successful life before passing away in January, 2005.
When she came into limelight in 1975, she was considered the queen of disco and ageless beauty.

With her almost no-make-up look, disco girl outfits and bold personality, she commanded the attention of a
room full of people without trying too hard
ARABIAN BLISS

Parveen really knew how to work the Arabian ensemble with her quirky tastes. The purple and pearl outfit
in Chandi Sona was a hot favourite, with the headgear adding the much needed flamboyance. Her other
two appearances in Mr Aashiq Mera Naam and Razia Sultan too were a visual treat for every fashionista
with traditional accessories adding the shimmer.

Actresses like Kareena Kapoor in her guest appearance in Billu or even in Jab We Met and Anushka
Sharma in Band Baaja Baaraat wore harem pants but with modern cuts and patterns. And its a no brainer
to know that since then these have become a regular among youngsters
THE Bikini Girl

Parveen Babis voluptuous curves and silky mane was the stuff technicolour fantasies were made of. She
had effortless charisma and became an overnight phenomenon in Yeh Nazdeekiyan with her bikini number.
Parveen was savvy and sexy and embodied the new Indian woman
PLUNGING NECKLINES

Parveen Babi sizzled her way through with her carefree confidence. Her white and silver gown with the
plunging neckline in Shaan was a popular number. She always kept her low necks simple without too
many accessories and matched her deep cuts with a string necklace as in the red and gold ensemble (Do
Aur Do Paanch). Her Indian outfits too were daring just like the one in Rang Birangi because she melded
the traditional with her own brand of sensuality
HEADBANDS AND FLOWER CLIPS

Parveens look in the movie Ameer Aadmi Gareeb Aadmi was an instant rage. She bought in an interesting
change to the contemporary headband. She also introduced the famous flower clips as accessories in the
fashion world.
Later, actresses like Aishwarya Rai and Priyanka Chopra were seen sporting the flower accessory and head
band.
LEOTARDS AND BODYSUITS

In an era before size-zero became a template, she was perfection in leotards, swim suits and gowns that few
Hindi film heroines, barring one other, dared to wear in the 70s and the early 80s.
There's a lot to watch and learn from the shapely Parveen Babi in leotards and tights as bouquet bear
Amitabh Bachchan finds out in one of his many awkward moments of Namak Halal
METALLIC DRESSES

Parveen Babi was seen sporting shiny metallic dresses in movies like Shaan and Namak Halal.

Silver and golden metallic gowns dominated the 70s disco songs.

Later in 2014, Sonakshi Sinha was spotted in a similar silver outfit with head gear inspired by Parveen
Babis glamorous look in the song Pyaar Karne Wale.
SHARMILA TAGORE

Sharmila Tagore has been a fashion icon for so many years now, from wearing elaborate bouffants to body-
hugging suits and curvy dresses. Even today, she turns heads with her simple yet elegant sarees.

An actor in the Hindi film industry, Sharmila Tagore has received two National Film Awards and two
Filmfare Awards for her performances. In 2013, she was honored with the Padma Bhushan by the
Government of India.
FIGURE HUGGING SALWAR KAMEEZ

It was in the Yash Chopra directed film Waqt , a 1965 released film, that people saw the glamorous side
of Sharmila. In the film she played a rich mans daughter where she wore trendy tight churidars along with
tight kurtas. Sharmila Tagore achieved much fame for wearing body hugging Salwar Kamiz and skin tight
curvy dresses.

The style got popular among young women all across India. These outfits were also worn by the actresses
like Vyjanthimala, Asha Parekh in the films like Jewel Thief and Love in Tokyo. The style suited
more on women with thin and curvaceous body.
BEEHIVE HAIRDO AND WINGED EYELINER

Sharmila Tagores bouffant hair style also made an impact along with the elongated eye defining liner.

Both upper and lower lash lines were heavily lined to create dark, dramatic peepers which were paired
with pale, nude lips and bronzed faces.

Around now, the distinction between the leading lady and the vixen began to blur, with the former
experimenting with bold cat eyes that reflected a strong, sensuous woman ready to take on the world with
her infinite powers of seduction.
Actresses like Aishwarya Rai and Deepika Padukone were spotted in the beehive hair do and winged
eyeliner look in the 2000 release Action Release and Om Shanti Om respectively
SWIM SUIT

Taking the road less travelled, Sharmila Tagore during the 1960s made this statement true by choosing
to make an onscreen appearance in a one piece swim suit in the film An evening in Paris that caught all
the attention in the fashion world at that time.

She also wore knotted blouses that set her image as a strong and bold fashionista.
LIGHT SAREES IN FLORAL PRINT

In the 1966 film Anupama directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, she wore simple sarees and sensitively
portrayed the introvert and insecure Uma, who pines for her fathers love.

From a wide range and varieties of sarees to choose from, Shiffon and georgette were Sharmila Tagores
personal favorites with floral prints in subtle and soft colors helping her flaunt her style and make her look
simple yet stylish.

The way she draped herself in her selected sarees was full of grace that accurately got along with her
image as the trend setter.
REKHA

Queen of glam and sass, Rekha is a force to be reckoned with. Unapologetic about her decisions (both
personal and professional), she's known among her peers as a strong woman.

If someone had to describe Rekha's style in the 70's, they would say she was the epitome of glitz and
glam. With metallic colours, bold make-up and sexy avatars, Rekha's style sense was unparalleled to any
other actress at the time.
THE UMRAO JAAN LOOK

The entire look of Umrao Jaan was outstanding. Watching Umrao Jaan gives you a perspective on what
costumes in a film is all about. The detailing, the flair, the cuts, the movement of the dress when Rekha
danced, all of it created a mesmerising effect. The period setting of Umrao Jaan gave its designer
(Subhashini Ali) the scope to create magic. Stunning Rekha is memorable in this pearl-hued brocade
dress.
The mujra look from Umrao Jaan has been replicated by several heroines since then by actresses like
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit.
KANJEEVARAM SAREE

Rekha is admired and followed by every woman as she is among the most eminent personalities who
pioneered the trend of the Kanjeevaram sarees all over the world. Her presence in the majority of
Bollywood award functions, parties, wedding ceremonies and other social occasions are marked by her
signature style in a Kanchivaram saree. Rekha keeps changing her looks as per the design patterns of the
sarees. She is very organized when it comes to matching the jewellery, accessories and her hairstyles.

She prefers to wear golden sarees when it comes to Kanchivaram but on many occasions she had tried
vibrant shades including violet, green, maroon, pink and many other colors.
STATEMENT GOLD JEWELLERY

While the movie Utsav showed us the epitome of dressing up in Indian chunky statement pieces, our diva
Rekha took it one notch up dolling up in the best of maangtikas (hair accessories), naths (nose rings),
churis (bangles) and statements necklaces.

She is very inclined to wearing heavy jewellery with big jhumkas that are a matched set with wide
neckpiece in gold and stonework. She wears exclusive collections that can be a good inspiration for
extracting ideas of wide Kangans, golden bangles and contrast creation. At some occasions she had used
jhumkas with extensions, which are prefect for the Indian ceremonies and rituals including marriage
celebrations.
PIXIE CUTS AND POUTY LIPS

Rekha catches up with the times and doesnt hesitate to match up to trends and fashion tales galore.
Sporting a pixie cut with matte brown pouty lips for a famous fashion magazine, showed us how Rekha is
all game to experiment with new-age fashion.
HEADGEAR

From whacky Mohawk hairdo to desi turbans, Rekha has been seen sporting the boldest look in the olden
times.

She was also known as the Maddona of India for her intriguing headgear and experimental sense of style.
1970s BOLLYWOOD ACTORS
1970s
In terms of Bollywood audiences, the 70s brought
fashion trends that were a treat to the eyes. Amitabh
Bachchan became a symbol of hatred against the
establishment and someone who the public could
relate to. Again, Rajesh Khanna epitomized style in yet
another decade and proved as to why he was the first
superstar of Bollywood. Bell bottoms, dark shades,
tight blazers and broad ties were the outfit of the
decade and mens hairstyles were grew longer and
sideburns were very much in.
AMITABH BACHCHAN

Whenever one talks about

how cinema has defined the
contours of fashion in the
country, one name that would
stand at the forefront of taking
the lead would be Amitabh

1980s:

The 1980s brought colour to the world of Bollywood. Mens fashion could be split into three
demographics. Some wore extravagant disco outfits accompanied with ostentatious
accessories, others delved into denim, mean while others grew facial hair and went for a more
rugged look. The stars of the 80s were Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor who both gave great
performances as police men with awesome moustaches. With regards to the claim that the 80s
were the decade of colour for India, Mithun Chakraborty epitomised this with his bold and flashy
style in Disco Dancer, a look that was an instant hit with Indians imitating the funky colours and
sparkling attire.
Mithun Chakraborty
Chakraborty was a Bollywood star of the 1980s, with the brand of impossible heroics and made-for-the-
front-row lines as he starred in over 110 releases in this decade.

In 1982, Disco Dancer extended Chakraborty's popularity across India and into Russia. Even today,
youngsters copy the "Mithun-style dance".
Disco Dancer changed everything for me. I never thought it would become such a big hit. It became a
rage with the youngsters. All of a sudden everyone found me to be charming and good looking. I became a
hero said Mithun Chakraborty in an interview.

Moreover, the song still inspires the filmmakers and actors. While Ranbir Kapoor grooved to the song in
his film Anjaana Anjaani, the song was revisited and served fresh by Mithun himself in Golmaal 3.
Aamir Khans Delhi Belly also had the song I hate you like I love you inspired by this iconic number of
the legendary star. by Ruchi Kaushal.

The 80s were rocked by the disco songs of Mithunda (as he is lovingly called in West Bengal) and the
nation got its first dose of American rock and roll music. Disco King Bappi Lahiri was the music composer
for most of these dance-based songs and this duo gave us the grooviest songs of the 80s which are still
remixed in discos. They are famous not only in India but throughout the world!
Anil Kapoor
Baggy Sweaters

The loose, oversized sweaters popularised by actors like Rishi Kapoor and Anil Kapoor could easily
become a part of everyday fashion. Bold geometric prints and a decent colour palette served the
simplistic appeal all the more.

"I wanted to model this character on the 1980s heroes, especially the biggest ones then like Jackie Shroff
and Anil Kapoor. They were the biggest style icons of the 1980s," the 30-year-old said here Friday while
promoting the film at Radio City.

" This boy is from Dongri and obviously he will watch Hindi films and he will be inspired by his heroes.
So, I have taken a lot of inspiration from Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor for styling, shoes, hairstyle and
moustache. So, the whole look has been inspired by that," he added.

Jackie Shroff
Jackie Shroff was introduced to the film industry by Dev Anand in the film "Swami Dada". Subhash
Ghai made him star with his film "Hero", which had Jackie in the lead role. Jackie Shroff was often
paired with another leading actor Anil Kapoor and together they gave many hit films like "Karma",
"Ram Lakhan" and "Parinda".

Jackie was one of the top actors in the industry in the 1980s and 90s, not just for his performances, but
also for his fashion sense, and especially for his dialogue delivery in films and his 'Mumbaiyaa' style of
talking where he regularly uses words like 'bhidu'.
