What exactly is an
Transistor?
A transistor is a semiconductor device used to
amplify or switch electronic signals and
electrical power.
It is composed of semiconductor material
usually with at least three terminals for
connection to an external circuit.
If you're familiar with Minecraft, it sounds like an
real life Redstone Comparator.
Transistor's History
Before the Transistor, the vacuum tube triode or thermionic
valve which was invented in 1907 and used in the same
manner as it successor, The Transistor.
Although it didn't last long because it was very bulky and
produced excess heat from the electricity flowing through it
causing its life to be shortened. It also used a lot of power
compared to the Transistor which uses far less power.
Later in 1947, it was invented and tested at Bell Labs in Murray
Hill, NJ which is a research center for AT&T.
It was invented by William Shockley, John Bardeen and Walter
Brattain
Types of Transistors

There are different types of Transistors

Just to name a few
Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT)- three-terminal
electronic device made of doped semiconductor
material and may be used in amplifying or switching
applications.
Named because their operation involves both electrons
and holes.
Have terminals labeled: emitter, collector, base.
Small current at the base terminal that pass from the
base to emitter that can modify or switch a larger
current between collector and emitter terminals.
IGBT or Insulated Gate
Bipolar Transistor
Three-terminal power semiconductor device
typically used as an electronic switch.
Types of transistors that's can switch electric
power in modern appliances
For example, electric cars, trains, variable speed
refrigerators, air-conditioners and even stereo
systems with switching amplifiers.
MOSFET Transistor

Also called Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-

Effect Transistor
Used in integrated circuits to control the
conductivity of a channel.
Highly dependent on negative and positive
charges.
Can limiting a device's power levels, storing
data, and being used as a switch for a wide
variety of electronic devices.
Darlington
Transistor
Two bipolar transistors
connected so that the current
being amplified by first
transistor is amplified even
further by the second one.
This model offers a higher
common-emitter current gain
than if both types of
transistors are separated and
can even take up less space
because both transistors can
share a collector.
How is it made?!

Most transistors are made of a solid piece of a semiconductor material, with at least
three terminals for connection to an external circuit.
Most common element of transistor power module is the silicon chip.
Most bipolar transistors contain Darlington transistor chips due to the high gain of
Darlington Configurations
What would do without
the transistor?
It would probably make it harder to get electricity
around
Some of today's appliances wouldn't work properly
or at all without it
