Higher Education Career

Started in 2012 in the Registrars Office of Georgia State University
Enrollment Services Specialist
Research Assistant COAS (2013)
Grants and Contracts
Grants Contracts Officer II (2014)
Managing Federal & Non-Federal
Started in the department
Currently in the College Level.
Future: Research Director at an International Institution.
Higher Education Research

Historically, science has been largely supported through private sponsorship.
German universities adopted the idea that it was the academys responsibility
to advance the understanding of science.
Galileo's work in the 16th and 17th centuries were mainly funded by individuals
and the Pope.
Research today: Funded by the federal and state government and private
entities.
Professors holding Ph.Ds encouraged to apply for research grants through
different funding agencies.
Grants are available to many different departments in different amounts.
Federal Grants

History of Federal Grants in Higher education
The Soviet Unions launch of Sputnik triggered the United
States to realize that the Soviets had beaten them into
space and that they possessed rocket technology.
Congress responded a year later with the National Defense
Education Act, increasing funding for education at all
levels with focus on scientific and technical education.
Since Sputnik, research has changed the dynamics of
higher education institutions.
Federal Research & Development in the past Three
Fiscal Years

New Administration Effects on Research

National Institutes of Health (NIH) cuts.

Cut of $5.8 billion.
Biomedical research and public health are at risk.
Funding from NIH flows to more than 2,600
institutions around the country
Produces more than 313,000 full- and part-time jobs
Effects to community and state.
Federal research grant money runs primarily to
universities.
Colleges and Universities have impacts on their
communities.
Non-Federal Grants

Non-Federal grants are grants received by colleges and Universities that come
from private agencies.
Alfred P. Sloan Foundation
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
Carnegie Corporation
Ford Foundation
These types of awards are typically not subject to all government rules and
regulation but rather contracts among the entities.
Professors typically have more flexibility in research with non-federal awards.
Global Research

Global development of research in

international higher education
Funding and resources are scarce
The Centre for Global Higher Education
(CGHE)
largest research center in the world
specifically focused on higher education
and its future development.
Faculty Involvement

Competitive higher-education environment.
Universities and their faculty must
unavoidably do more and more, and show
accomplishments by the numbers.
On top of research faculty are also still
expected to teach.
Creates stress
Student Researchers

Fellowship Grants

Supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing research-based
master's and doctoral degrees in different fields.
Students without grants
work under a professor and typically have to teach a course as well as aid in the
professors research to receive a tuition waiver and/or stipend.
