IN A PROJECT OR IN A BUSINESS VENTURE

SWOT analysis may be used in any decision-
making situation when a desired end-state
(objective) has been defined

SWOT analysis must be start with :
Identify a clear objective
SWOT analysis can be used to help in the
persuit of this objective. In this case, SWOTs
are :
Strength :attributes that are helpful to
achieving the objective
Weaknesses : attributes that are harmful to
achieving the objective
Opportunities : external condition that
are helpful to achieving the objective
Threats : external conditions that are
harmful to achieving the objective

Identification of SWOT is essential because


subsequent steps in the process of planning
for achievement of the selected objective are
to be derived from the SWOTs
The SWOTs are used as inputs to the creative
generation of possible strategies, by asking
and answering each of the following 4
questions, many times :
1. How can we Use each Strength ?
2. How can we Stop each Weakness ?
3. How can we Exploit each Opportunity ?
4. How can we Defend againts each Threats
?
STRENGTH
Internal positive aspects that are under control and
upon which you may capitalize in planning
work experience
education
strong technical knowledge within your field
specific transferable skills (communication,
teamwork,leadership skills)
Personal characteristics (creativity, optimism, a high
level of energy)

Good contact/successful networking

Interaction with professional organizations


WEAKNESSES :
Internal negative aspects that are under your
control and that you may plan to improve
Lack of work experience
Lack GPA, wrong major
Lack of goals, lack of self knowledge
Weak technical knowledge
Weak skills (leadership,interpersonal
communication, teamwork)
Personal characteristics (poor work ethic,
lack of discipline, lack of motivation,
indecisiveness, shyness, too emotional)

OPPORTUNITIES
Positive external conditions that you do not
control but of which you can plan to take
advantage
Positive trends in your field that will create more
jobs (globalization,technological advances)
Opportunities you could have in the field by
enhancing your education
Field is particularly in need of your set of skills
Opportunities you could have through greater self-
knowledge
Opportunities for advancement in your field
Strong network
THREATS
Negative external condition that you do not control
but the effect of which you may be able to lessen
Competition from your cohort of college
graduates
Competition with superior skills, experience,
knowledge
Competitors with better job hunting skills than
you
Competitors who went to schools with better
reputation
From SWOT analysis, you will have a road map that
shows you how to capitalize on your strength and
minimize your weaknesses. You should then use this
map to take advantage of opportunities and avoid or
lessen threats
Avoiding Errors

Conducting a SWOT analysis before defining and


agreeing upon an objective (a desired end state).
Opportunities = strengths
SWOTS = possible strategies. SWOTs are descriptions
of conditions, while possible strategies define actions.

SWOT analysis should distinguish between where your
organization is today, and where it could be in the
future.

information to plan how to get a thing that you want to
get by optimalize yourself
