Cargo Loading and

Trimming
Loading Sequence
When deciding loading sequence, longitudinal strength with
deballasting plan at every step shall be considered.
The plan shall be decided in consideration of loading rate and
ballast pumping rate because dead ballast becoms just dead
freight.
Especially, in case of ore bulk carrier, Duty officers shall do
their best not to lose the chance of deballasting because the
loading-late is too much.
In order to fast loading, terminal requests frequently to shorten
the number of loading steps, for exam) in case loading 25,000
mt into 3 steps with 8000mt a step commonly, terminal requests
2 steps instead of 3. In this case, the vessel shall be decided
after full considering the stress.
Cargo loading
Soon after berthing, chief officer talks with super cargo or terminal
personnel on shipment such as S.F, loading sequence, the
number of gang and loading rate, etc.,.
Preparation beforehand shall be done after confirming time to be
taken for loading not to be problem with deballasting.
Cargo qty having been loaded shall be calculated with reading
draft at least one time a day in case loading duration long.
In case that there are much error of S.F rendered by terminal or
shore gauge, there might be problems with loading status and trim
and so on due to much discrepancy between loading plan and
actual loading qty. Thus, amended stowage plan shall be done if
found something wrong after draft survey done by herself with
enough time in advance.
What the load is concentrated at one hold shall be avoided in
consideration of stress during loading.

Balance Cargo for Trimming
Stop loading work at about time when trimming cargo remains
after having loaded as per loading sequence. (remain about
1000 mt for trimming cargo but there might be difference
according to vessels size, about 3~5% of total cargo )
In case of ore bulk carrier, 1st trimming is carried out when
4000~5000mts remain and final trimming is carried out with
about 1000mt.
Trimming is conducted for making draft she wants with balance
cargo after draft survey.
In this case, making draft she wants is conducted by allocating
the balance cargo to each trimming hold which nominated
holds with large trimming moment.

Precautions for Trimming
Make upright the vessel when departing a port through the
close cooperate with stevedore, ensure safe departure
condition with proper trimming cargo, and confirm balance
cargo with doing draft check frequently.
About time When loading is almost finished, mobilize 2/O, 3/O
and check the draft continuously in order not to be overdraft,
and adjust departure trim and heeling and so on.
Officers should have been knowing a accurate point time of
trimming with checking midship draft frequently 1~2 hours
before trimming.
Occasionally the load cargo has been loaded already at the
about time when trimming due to weight scale error. Therefore,
draft checking shall be carried out frequently.
Chief officer should know with asking to foreman about the
weight scale error before loading. If the error is large, trimming
cargo also shall be taken aside much amount. If initial draft
survey is conducted with a surveyor who knows well about port
circumstance, the surveyor would recommend exact cargo qty
for trimming to chief officers request.
In case large scale conveyor, cargo on the belt has been
continuously loaded after chief officers request to stop loading,
which could be overdraft. Thus, know how much the qty on the
belt and conduct loading in consideration of this qty.
Do not relegate task to shore side about qty of balance cargo for
adjusting trim/heeling/draft. Namely there might be an
impossible occasion to adjust trim/heeling with shore scales
balance cargo because the error between shore and vessel is
large amount. The balance cargo shall be calculated basis on
ships midship draft.
When loading grain It is good to nominate, in order to get exact
trim to sail, the last 2 holds which have large trimming moment
as slack hold because there may be discrepancy between
calculated value and actual one due to basis data error.
