Hold Cleaning
Hold cleaning is usually conducted by ships crew but it may done
by persons who are employed to clean hold under ships supervision
according to special regulations or charter party.
Dealing with Dunnage
Dunnages which were used during previous voyage need to be arranged
to discard in the sea from 25miles off shore where shall not be special
sea. *Dunnage and steel band scraps, in M/V HJPB, which used for
securing hot coils shall be collected immediately and discharged to
shore facilities.

Sweeping
In sweeping, cargo residues shall be well swept off beam, frame, bracket
and pipe, etc., Especially,in case of loading grain, the special care shall
be sought after to sweep cargo residues because surveyor is strict
over last cargo residues remained.
Hold washing

1) Residues have to be blown off upper part of frame, lower part of

cross deck structures where high pressure water can not reach
before washing.
2) Open bilge wells in the cargo hold and wash them down w ith high
pressure water spray.
3) Pay special attention to the strainer box which may be removed when
washing it. In case missing strainer box, pipe lines or pump inlet
could be blocked up by much of accumulated cargo residues.
4) Be sure to receive enough fresh water before arriving at discharging
port to rinse salinity inside cargo hold after washing down by sea
water which can corrode the surface of inside cargo hold or damage
to cargo. Cargo hold survey used to be failed due to remained salinity
in some ports.
5) Run bilge pump without interruption during washing down cargo hold and
pay attention that strainer of bell mouth is not to be blocked up.
6)Ascertain condition of suction over the bilge line and non-return valve.
* In case being found the discharging driving water only without cargo
sludge, close over board valve for a while in order to make backward
flowing the driving water and the sludge which has blocked up pipe line will
be taken away from suction pipe. After this process then open the over
board v/v again.
Painting Works

1) Loose scales of old paint should be completely removed after washing

not to mix with cargo.
The scales on the rear part of frames shall be fully removed and scales
which may be spotted by a cargo hold inspector shall be taken away.
Works at corners where rust and paint scales are peeled off shall be
carried out completely.Above mentioned matters can cause fail on hold
inspection.
2) Do touch-up paint on rusty parts after peeling off scales and apply paint
all over heavy rusty parts such as tank top.
3) Hatch covers shall be pre-checked up if corrosive part is or not. In case
old vessel, make a preparation for anti-leaking using marine tape.( for
this work, make sure to stock hatch cover sealing tapes or ram-neck
tapes)
Removing Smell and Dry
1) Dry work shall be conducted early after washing hold in order to do
smooth work of scaling off and applying paint.
2) Bilge wells need to be cleaned and work for anti-moisture fully.Especially,
do scrap to peel off scales and apply paint on it.
3) The bilge well covers need to be covered with burlap and to be fastened
with cloth tape not to drop cargo into bilge well.
4) If a hold needs to be painted all over, the painting works shall be carried
out 3-4days before arrival in order to give time to get rid of smell and be
dryed.
Please note that there many cargo hold inspections are failed due to give
out severe smell which is able to effect on changing cargo in quality.
Hatch covers and vent dampers shall be closed not to come in any
insects inside hold when the vessel are waiting for berth in port or
anchorage.

Inspection prior to loading Grain
A. Hold Inspection
This inspection is to be carried out by a surveyor who is working for
Agricultural Department or similar authorities to thisA.D. or government of
importing country in order to ascertain proper preparation for loading grain .
B. Safety Inspection for Loading
This inspection is carried out by surveyors basis on rules relative to the
grain transportation, whether stowage and stability are proper or not, for
ships safety.Surveyors are;
- USA: National Cargo Bureau (N.C.B) under the Department of Transport
in USCGs proxy.
- Canada : The port of Warden under The Department of Transport
-Australia : Surveyor under The department of Shipping and Transport
- Others : Similar authorities to the above mentioned.
Exam Stability
Examination of Stability is to confirm by surveyor that if the grain
stability calculation made by the ships personnel in compliance with
relevant rules prior to load grain has been calculated correctly or not.
And ships staff shall show the grain loading booklet/approval of
ships plan for the carriage of grain bulk to the surveyor.
If the data calculated by ships personnel are correct, the certificate of
readiness will be issued. And the point of time when issuing cert of
readiness and passing hold inspection is to be substantial Notice of
Readiness T ender
Thus, Grain stability calculation shall be made prior to arrival in order
not to delay N/R T ender.
Inspection after loading

Whether it has been loaded in accordance with stowage plan or not

Whether the trimming is of suitability in slack hold or not, all conditions
have been satisfied with rules then certificate of loading will be issued.
Ship could not sail out the port limit w ithout this cert. Nevertheless, if
having sailed the ship would be considered to violate USCG Regulations
in USA.
Warning points during Hold Survey

a) Preparation for the Hold Survey shall be completely conducted

because the survey may be carried out as surveyors subjective
judgment, and there may be difference in intensity of inspection
criterion. Thus, ships staffs need to be smooth relationship with
surveyor in polite manner.
b) When carrying hold inspection, chief officer should guide surveyor
in person.
c) When hold inspection is carried, chief officer makes crew in 3~4
men a group and the groups should stand by to clear point-out
matters at each hold with holding blooms, dust pan, waste,
scrapper and ladder in order not to be given even minor defects.
