12 members (10 girls, 2 guys) Age range: 17-23 Diverse ethnicities Practice is usually twice a week Information gathered through interviews and surveys Marywoods step team has been experiencing dizziness, due to lack of proper hydration and eating, as reported by the co-captain of the team Been on the team for 3 years Identified causes: Busy schedules, forgetfulness, fast movements, think that practice may not be challenging enough Goal: Reduce the cases of dizziness during step team practice by November 14th, 2016. Objectives: Conduct a nutrition intervention on November 13th 2016. Stress the importance of hydration during the intervention Stress the importance of eating before exercise during the intervention Ask coaches to bring extra granola bars to practice and give them to people who have not eaten Conduct a survey three weeks later to see if the goal was reached Uses the fear of a perceived threat as a motivating factor, as well as, perceived benefits as a more favorable path to action This model will benefit the Step team because there is a frequent threat of dizziness during practice The first piece of the model states that people will take action to change their ways because they see themselves as threatened by the condition All members of the step team have either experienced or witnessed a case of dizziness during practice This is a condition that has the potential to be very dangerous especially if it causes someone to fall or pass out Threatens their well-being The second part of the model states that people will search for a course of action in order to reduce their risk and will have confidence in its effectiveness With information learned in the intervention, members of the Step team will be able to reduce their risk for dizziness by eating and hydrating more before practice The last piece of the model suggests that people will believe they have the ability to perform the new behavior By completing the nutrition intervention, the motivated members will have the knowledge, support, and confidence in order to preform to their highest ability 35 minutes total Introduction and pre-test=10 minutes Discuss information on a provided handout=15 minutes Hydration (5 minutes) Pre exercise nutrition (5 minutes) Nutrition during exercise (5 minutes) Conclusion and post-tests= 10 minutes Strengths: Participants will get the information they need to be more successful in practice Nutrition education programs are proven to be effective Weaknesses: As a nutrition major, I may speak above their ability to understand nutrition Opportunities: This is a learning experience and will help me to identify better educational approachs when presenting nutrition topics Threats: If the captains of the step team are not on board with the intervention If many members do not show up to the intervention Product: Nutrition information is the service to be delivered. Place: Dance studio in the athletics center at Marywood University. It is in this location because this is where practices are usually held and it is accessible to everyone. Promotion: I contacted the captains and co-captains through emails to pitch the idea of the nutrition intervention. Then I met them face to face to discuss details of the program. The captains and co-captains then contacted the team members to come to the intervention through emails and text messages. Position: Giving nutrition education to the step team members can be positioned as an act of encouragement or helpfulness. It encourages the members to eat and hydrate before and during practice and it helps the team to come together to make the most out of practice. 1) Do you think eating and drinking before practice is important? 2) How much water do you think you need per day? 3) What are the benefits of water? Hydrating is important because it helps cool down the body Water is the most important nutrient Most people need about 8-12 cups of water per day To calculate your specific needs: Take your weight in pounds and divide it by 2.2 to get your weight in kilograms. Pounds / 2.2 = Kg Take your Kg and divide by 8= Signs of Dehydration Dizziness, fatigue, raise in body temperature, discomfort, impatience, headache, confusion, nausea Can cause: fainting, cardiovascular strain, heat exhaustion, increased heart rate Sources= Water, sports drinks, caffeinated drinks, juice, fruits, veggies, meats Not= soda Goal = Clear or pale yellow urine every 1-2 hours DURING EXERCISE Is It Important? Yes! You should be hydrating frequently throughout the workout as well as consuming small portions of food Helps keep you energized and performing to your best ability Sources Granola bar, water, Gatorade PRE-EXERCISE Why is Eating before Practice Good for You? Helps to keep you energized all through the practice, stops your body from breaking down essential protein stores, food is shown to improve attitudes, reduces fatigue and dizziness When should you eat before practice? You should be eating frequently throughout the day In the hours leading up to practice, you should be consuming a diet high in carbohydrates and some protein Why? Because when you exercise, carbs are providing you with the most energy to perform to your best ability, therefore you must have enough carbs in your system to sustain you for your activity and to prevent your body from breaking down muscle What are some Good Food Sources? Pastas, wholegrain bread, fruits such as bananas, yogurt, oats What are some Bad food Sources? Fatty foods- doughnuts, cakes, pies, pizza Same as pre-test but with added questions: 11) Did you learn anything new? 12) What did you find most interesting? 13) Are you more likely to hydrate and eat before practice? 14) What could be done to help you start/continue this healthy habit? The nutrition intervention was implemented on November 13th, 2016 There were 10 remaining members- all participated in my program The members of the step team were very open to learning this new information in order to improve their performance Before the program- only half of the members could give me a detailed description of why water was important and eight of the ten members could give me three signs of dehydration After= all members answered correctly Before- was clear that most members did not know what foods were adequate for pre and during workout meals After= 9/10 answered correctly Before- most did not know what times they should be eating After= all answered correctly Program= Success Andersson, G., & Yardley, L.
