FIESTAS

INTRODUCTION
In spain there are many regional and national
holidays which means that there is at least on
Spanish fiesta taking place every month of every
year. Spanish fiestas celebrate the history,
geography and culture of Spain and remember
some of the Spanish traditions. Spanish festivals
are famous worldwide Every town, city and region
has its own celebrations or Spanish fiestas in
honour of their patron saint, important historical
event or founder. Because there are so many
different fiestas I will be going into detail of three
of the many fiestas that there are.
DIA DE LOS REYES
January 6th
WHAT IS DIA DE LOS REYES

El Dia de Los Reyes is celebrated on January 6th every year

in honour of the three wise men. Tis holidaay remembers
the daty when the three wise men brought gifts to Jesus
Christ. This day brings all Christmas festivities to an end
and is the day that Spanish people exchange gifts.
During El Dia de Reyes Spaniards serve Rosca de Reyes or
Kings Cake. The Kings Cake has an oval shape to symolize a
crown and has a baby doll in side to represent the baby
Jesus. The doll symbolizes the hiding of the baby JEsus
from Herod's soldiers. Traditionally roscas are
embelished with dried, candies fruit to symbolized the
crowns jewels. The person who gets the slice with the doll
must host a party on Dia de la Candelaria in February.
WHERE DID IT COME FROM
Dia de los Reyes marks the biblical adoration of baby
Jesus by the tree kings who are also referred to as the
three wise men.According to the Gospel of Matthew the
men found Jesus by following a star across the desert
for tweleve days to reach Bethlehem..Casper, Melchior
and Balthazar-representing Europe ,Arabia and
Africa travelled by camel, orse and elephant in order to
give the baby Jesus symbolic gifts.
The gold given by one of the men is a symbolic
understanding of Jesus' royal role as ''King of the
Jews''.The frankincense signigies the divine nature of
the babys life on Earthas he is the son of God. Thy
myrrh was a gifdt to the baby as a symbol of his
mortality and insinuating that his death was a means of
SAN FERMIN FIESTAS
PAMPLONA
WHAT ARE THE SAN FERMIN FIESTAS
PAMPLONA

The San Fermin Fiestas Pamplona are

celebrated in Pamplona in Navarra
annually fro the 6th of July to the 14th
of July. It is very famous worldwide
because of the running bulls where the
bulls are lead through the streets of the
old quarter as far as the plaza de torros
by runners.
WHY ARE THE SAN FERMIN FIESTAS
CELEBRATED
The San Fermin fiestas are celebrated in
honour of the patron saint of Navarra, San
Fermin, but the religious aspect of the
festival seems to have become less
important over the last number of years.
Now the fiestas are seen as a large
gathering of people who have travelled
from all over the world where partying ,
funa nd joy aare the most important
aspects of the fiesta. San Fermin
WHAT HAPPENS AT THE SAN FERMIN
FIESTAS
The Encierro is an event that is very important to the
Sanfermines that nakes the fiesta a sight that would
be unimaginable anywhere else in the world. The
holiday was inspired by the process ofmoving bulls
from outside the city in to the bullring. The encierro
takes place from july 7th to July 14th and officilally
begins in Calle Santo Domingo when the clock fo the
church of San Cermin strikes at 8:00am After
launching the two rockets, the bulls charge behind
the runners for 825 metres (the distance between the
corral and the bulring.Typically the runonly lasts
about two or three minutes.
THE DANGERS OF SAN FERMIN FIESTAS

In 2017 over a thousand thrill-seekers raced

alongside aggressive bulls in the San Fermin
bull run. Four people were injured due to falls
and people crashing into them or running over
them. A further 5 people were gored by the
bulls. Participants understand the dangers of
the run before they start but go ahead with it
anyway, despite the constant injuries and
fatalities that occur each year.
LA TOMATINA
WHAT IS LA TOMATINA
La Tomatina is a food fight festival that is always held
on the last Wednesday of August in the town of Bunol
near Valencia, Spain. Each year thousands of people
from around the world travel to Bunol to take part in
the world's biggest food fight where over one
hundred metric tons over-ripe tomatoes are throw in
the streets. Up until 2013 between. 40,000 and
50,000 people squeezed into the Valencian streets to
take part in this massive tomato food fight which
more quadrupled Bunol's normal 9,000 people
population. In 2013 official ticketing was put in place
so now only 20,000 lucky participants get to take
part.
HOW LA TOMATINA STARTED

La Tomatina has been a very strong on- going tradition in Bunol

since 1944. No one in fully sure how exactly the tradition
started. Some theories include: a food fight among friends,
class war, a volley of tomatoes from bystandards at a carnival, a
practical joe on a bad musician, a chaotic aftermath of a lorry
spillage.
One of the most popular theories is that irritated townspeople
attacked the city council with tomatoes during a town
celebration.
The festival was banned during the Spanish State period under
Francisco Franco for having no religious significance, but took
place again in the 1970's after his departure.
The festival is in honour of the town's patron saints, Luis
Bertran and Mare de Deu dels Desemparats (Mother of God of
the Defenseless), a title of the Virgin Mary.
WHAT HAPPENS AT LA TOMATINA
At Approximately 11am many trucks carry the tons of tomatoes into
the town centre, Plaza de Pueblo. The tomatoes are brought from
Exturnadura because they are less expensive. The festival is not
supposed to start until a brave soul has climbed up to the top of a two-
story high, greasy wooden pole and has reached the ham at the top
but as this process can often be very time consuming the festival
starts despite the brave soul reaching the meat. The signal for the
beginning of the fight is the firing of the water cannons. Then the
chaos begins.
After one hour of the tomato foo fight no more tomatoes can be
thrown and the cleaning process begins. This involves fire
trucks coming to spray down the streets with water supplied by a
Roman aqueduct. The streets are easy to clean because of the acidity
of the tomatoes.
