Fitting Trial
An experimental investigation of the
relationships between the dimensions of a
product (workstation, environment) and the
dimension of its users
An experimental study in which a sample of
subjects use an adjustable mock-up of a
workstation in order to make judgements as
to whether a particular dimension is too
big, too small or just right

Ilmu Keikhlasan Kecemerlangan

Fitting Trial
During the fitting trial they can simulate
performing the tasks, or critical aspects
of the tasks, to make their judgement
more realistic
It is a type of psychophysical experiment
in which people make subjective
(example : psychological) judgements
concerning the objective properties of
physical objects or events
Ilmu Keikhlasan Kecemerlangan
Procedure for conducting a fitting
trial

Construct a mock-up of the workplace

(with adjustability for all components
representing the features being
evaluated)
Include a simulation of the task(s) which
will be performed in the workplace
Select sample of subjects to represent
the relevant characteristics of the
eventual user population
Ilmu Keikhlasan Kecemerlangan
Procedure for conducting a fitting
trial

Decide the order of presentation of the

workplace features being evaluated (an
important decision when assessing
whether adjustability will be essential for
more than one of the features)
Determine the range which will be tested
for each component, with should extend
beyond the minimum and maximum
thresholds of acceptability
Ilmu Keikhlasan Kecemerlangan
Procedure for conducting a fitting
trial

Determine the interval between settings

which will be tested over this range,
depending on the sensitivity required of
the evaluation

Ilmu Keikhlasan Kecemerlangan

Procedure for conducting a fitting
trial
For each subject:
Decide the order of ascending and descending
presentation for each component (which should vary
between subjects to minimise bias due to any
systematic effect); usually there will be several
repetitions
Set the component at the specified intervals
throughout its range
At each setting :
Where appropriate, ask subject to performed real simulated
task
Ask the subject to judge whether the setting is acceptable

Ilmu Keikhlasan Kecemerlangan

Procedure for conducting a fitting
trial

Plot the result for all subjects

Determine which features need to be adjustable
and which can be fixed
Specify the best design compromised
dimension (or range of adjustability ) of each
feature of the workplace
Evaluate the final design solution, initially
perhaps with the mock-up but ultimately in the
workplace itself, and with the actual user
population

Workspace Simulation and
Digital Human Model
Assessing product/ workplace etc in virtual
environment
Can design any product / workplace
Have human models to represent human
Different size, man woman etc
Model can perform any task

METHOD OF LIMITS

This technique is a model or analog of

fitting trial, in which anthropometric
criteria and data are used as substitutes
for the subjective judgments of real
people
