How Do You Control Different Applications?

• In the past, you often had to use different kinds of control systems for
different applications in your plant:

process

The Problem With Separate Control Systems

• With separate control systems, you have to worry about:

– Different programming software
– Different hardware for spare parts
– Training on each different system
– Making each system communicate with the others

Logix Platform – Backplane

• Traditional control systems are based on a monolithic master/slave

address bus
– Single device rules the bus and controls all traffic
– Possible single point of failure if the controller or bus-arbiter fails
– Centralized approach to system design
• Logix breaks this mold by providing a multimaster
producer/consumer message-based parallel communications
network
– Puts producer/consumer technology directly on the backplane (1 to 1, 1 to n)
– Eliminates the controller as the center of the control universe
– Any device in the backplane can broadcast and communicate with any other device
without controller intervention
• Increases system bandwidth and performance
• Greater flexibility in architecting a control system
• Lets the controller do control

Logix Platform - System Model

• Modular, scalable architecture

• High performance passive, multimaster bus
• Producer-Consumer on the backplane
• Communications bridging independent of the controller
• True pre-emptive, multi-tasking, symbol-based controller
• Removal and insertion of any module under power without disruption to other
modules in the system (RIUP)
• Software Configuration of modules to point level
• Electronic Keying
• High functionality diagnostic and isolated I/O

28
Benefits of ControlLogix Redundancy

• Provides for higher system availability by switching control to a secondary controller chassis
if anything in the primary controller chassis fails. System will switch from primary to
secondary upon:
– Power loss to primary chassis.
– Hardware or firmware failure of any module in primary chassis.
– User program major fault in primary controller.
– Disconnection of a ControlNet tap or ContolNet cable break to a CNB in primary chassis.
– Removal of any module in the primary chassis.
• Very simple to implement.
– No programming is required. This minimizes the extra engineering effort to implement a
redundant system.
– Transparent switchovers allow you to use any Rockwell or third-party ControlNet devices.
– Automatic program cross-load and synchronization eliminates the need to maintain separate
programs for the primary and secondary controllers.
• Redundancy is supported by standard hardware.
– You don’t have to buy special versions of chassis, power supplies, Logix controllers, or
ControlNet Bridges to support redundancy.
• Supports a bumpless switchover.
– Bumpless switchover guaranteed for any logic in highest priority task. Outputs controlled by this
logic will never see a change in state just because of a switchover event.

Building a Typical Redundant System

1. Start with a standard ControlLogix chassis.

2. Add a L55 or L6x processor.
3. Add 1 or more ControlNet Bridges (Series D).
4. Add 1 System Redundancy Module.
ControlNET
5. Set up an identical second controller chassis.

6. Cable the SRMs together.
7. Add I/O, operator interfaces, and so forth to
the ControlNet network(s).
8. For HMI, add 1 or more Ethernet Bridges.

Logix Controller

• The Logix5555 or Logix556x controllers provide the necessary

enhancements to support ControlLogix redundancy.
– Logix5550 controllers do not support redundancy.
• Redundancy is supported in the Version 11.11 RSLogix 5000
release or later.
– Standard RSLogix 5000 programming software supports
ControlLogix redundancy.
• Swapping of 1756-ENBT IP addresses in the redundant chassis
was added in v13.5.

(Confidential – For Internal Use Only) Copyright © 2007 Rockwell Automation, Inc. All rights reserved. 31
ControlNet allows transparent switchovers

• The 1756-CNB Series D added the necessary hardware and

firmware changes to support ControlLogix redundancy.
• You set the same ControlNet address on the rotary switches
of the primary and secondary CNB’s.
– The primary CNB will use that address, and the secondary
CNB will automatically use the next higher address.
• On a switchover, the CNB’s automatically swap addresses.
– Any external ControlNet devices will simply continue to
communicate with the new primary controller.
– ControlLogix redundancy works transparently with 1756 I/O,
Flex I/O, drives, operator interfaces, or any other Rockwell or
third-party devices which can communicate to a Logix
controller over ControlNet.

System Redundancy Module

• The 1757-SRM provides the high speed data transfers Redundancy Module

between the primary and secondary chassis and arbitrates PRIM

primary/secondary chassis status.
• Two-slot module PRI COM OK

• Only one SRM per chassis needed.

– Supports 2 Logix5555 or 1 Logix556x processor, and up to
five CNB’s or ENBT’s per chassis.
• A fiber optic cable connects the primary and secondary
SRM’s.
– 1757-SRC1, SRC3, SRC10, SRC50, or SRC100 (1, 3, 10,
50, or 100 meter lengths)
– Testing is being conducted for longer lengths

Summary of Benefits

• Redundant controller chassis and power supplies provide higher system

availability.
• You implement redundancy using the same Logix processors and ControlNet
Bridges you use elsewhere in the plant. You don’t have to stock special spare
parts.
• Minimizes extra engineering effort since no programming is required to
implement.
• Transparent switchovers allow you to use any ControlNet devices which will
work with a non-redundant system.

Controller/Drive/Motor Compatibility

How do I know which motors work with different drives/controllers?

Controller/Drive/Motor Sizing/Selection

How do I know which motors and drives to choose for my application?

Selecting the correct Servo Motor and Drive is the first

step to implementing a successful motion application. An
undersized motor and drive will not produce optimal
performance; an oversized motor and drive will add
unnecessary cost to the solution.

Controller/Drive/Motor Sizing/Selection

How do I know what info I need in order to size my application?

Remember this:
Mass, Move and Means.
What am I moving?
How fast am I moving it?
What am I using to move it?
