are among of the most
challenging subjects in the
undergraduate and graduate levels.
A great majority of students who enrol
in the graduate program do not earn
the degree for failure to write a thesis.
In the 1950’s the Philippines was
second to Japan economically.
Forty-five years ago, the Philippines
was scientifically ahead to most of
the SEA nations as well as to
Japan. But now, according to
Arroyo, “The Philippines is less than
one-tenth of one percent”.
With regards to the number of
scientist, teachers and engineers
engaged in R and D per 10,000
population, the figure for Japan is
40, Korea is 7, the Philippines is 1.5.
The number of patents granted
per year is 45,000 in Japan, 245 in
Korea, 52 in the Philippines.
According to science officials,
the Philippines is among the cellar
dwellers as regards the so-called
technology index. If the US is
assigned 100 points, then Japan
gets 87, West Germany is 45 and
the Philippines – a blushing
negative 0.1. All these result to
inadequate research.
• Research is a key to development and
progress. It is a powerful force and
effective mechanism or tool of change
to meet and satisfy human’s daily needs.

PAST PROBLEMS PRESENT REMEDY
 Difficulty in going to  Elevators and
different floors Escalators
 Hand washing of  Washing machine
Clothes
 Difficulty in cooking  Rice cooker and
rice & reheating left- microwave oven
over
 Difficulty in  LRT and MRT
commuting and
heavy traffic
• Research is a great journey of
investigation, full of surprises, and loaded
with trials with an equivalent fun and
satisfaction.

Research means searching for a

theory, for testing theory, or for
solving a problem.

Theory – the analysis of a set of facts

in their relation to one another;
- abstract thought; speculation;
- an unproved assumption

It means that something exists

that needs investigation and
inquiry which later has to be
solved.

a systematic, controlled,
empirical, and critical
investigation(Kerlinger, 1973)
 a systematic quest for
undiscovered truth (Leedy, 1974)
 a systematic attempt to
provide answers to questions
(Tuckman, 1972)

Every scientific and technological

advancement of the new
millennium is a by-product of
research. With such improvement
in science and technology, the
quality of life progresses.

Research provides solutions to

problems we encounter. Since
problems are endless, research is
a continuing process.

☺ humans by their very nature are curious

beings that strive to understand what they
cannot explain.
☺ Material gain is another reason for
research.
☺ Fame is a driving factor.
☺ A less common force is a sense of duty or
spiritual necessity to expand and develop
the knowledge of the human race.

 Intellectual curiosity
 Prudence
 Healthy criticism
 Intellectual honesty

12/29/2017 12:35:51 AM
Intellectual curiosity

1. A researcher undertakes
reflective thinking and inquiry of
the things, situations and
problems around him.
2. He is eager to get information on
these often due to novelty and
unusualness.

12/29/2017 12:35:51 AM 25
Intellectual curiosity

3. He raises questions to seek

answer, continues to read the
related literature, makes use of
his experiences, and exercises his
creativeness and inventiveness.

12/29/2017 12:35:51 AM 26
Prudence

The researcher is prudent if he

conducts his research study at
the right time and at the right
place wisely, efficiently, and
economically.

12/29/2017 12:35:51 AM 27
Healthy Criticism

The investigator is always doubtful as

to the veracity of the results.
Normally, the researcher always
doubts the truthfulness of his findings
even if the data are gathered
honestly.

Intellectual Honesty

An intelligent researcher is honest

in collecting or gathering the
data or facts in order to arrive at
honest results.
