Introduction
• Safety is something that must be considered
by each individual in a working condition,
especially when doing practical work in the
chemical laboratory. To achieve a high level of
safety must be considered a general
procedure when working in chemistry lab
Safety Procedure in Chemical
Laboratory

• Personal Protective Equipment

• Lab Safety

• General Knowledge in Chemical Laboratory

Personal Protective Equipment
Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE) is
equipment that must be
used when working
according to hazard and
risk of working to maintain
the safety of workers
themselves and those
around him
. This obligation is already
agreed upon by the
government through the
Department of Labor
Republic Indonesia
Protective equipment should be weared each
individual during the laboratory

Lab coat

Pants

 Shoes covered to ankle

Personal Protective
Equipment
goggles
Sources of danger: splashes of liquid
chemicals or metals, dust, catalyst
powder, projectiles, gas, steam and
radiation
Faceguard
Used for explosive materials and are
very dangerous
gloves
•Function as a protective hand at
work in places or situations that
could result in injury to hand.
Materials and gloves form are
adapted with the function of each
job.
•Check the material and its
thickness!
•The material thickness is a safe
material
•Frequent change of gloves is the
better than only once
•Do not hold / touch doorknobs,
pens and phone while still wearing
gloves!
Ear Plug / Ear Muff

•Function is as ear protectors when

working in a noisy place.
Rubber, plastic paper, soft plastic,
wax, cotton.
Power attenuation (power
protection): 25 - 30 dB. There were
leaks to reduce the attenuation + / - 15
dB
Material from the wax
Weaknesses: less convenient and
quick dirty
Of cotton: the smallest attenuation of
2-12 dB.
Masker (Respirator)

•It is used to filter the air

that is inhaled while
working in places with
poor air quality (ex dust,
toxic, etc.)
•Used when working with
corrosive and poisonous
gas
Sneakers

It is as safety devices when working in wet or muddy

places. Mostly lined with metal to protect feet from
sharp or heavy objects, hot objects, liquid chemicals,
etc.
Laboratory
must be clear
and set in
every
consideration
SAFETY RULE IN LABORATORY
• Having ventilation system
• Available emergency
door
• Available fume hood
with good condition
• Available emergency
shower
• Available eye wash
• Available emergency
telepkone
• Available table work
Ventilation system
• Design laboratory must have adequate ventilation systems
with strong air circulation.
• Steam comes out of chemicals to be pulled into the
ventilation and neutralized prior to the environment
Condition of floor
• epoxy coated
• Grounding
• there is adequate lighting and lamp shades
• Clean
• not slippery
• not damaged (holes)
Emergency exit
• Sign should be clear
• Information towards the nearest exit
• Equipped with "emergency lightning" or emergency lights
• Do not locked
• Free from goods that hinder
• Directly related to the emergency stairs
Emergecy Shower
Requirements "Emergency
Shower"
• Having a water quality
standard for drinking water
• Minimum debit is 30 l / min
• Water flow does not stop automatically
• Checks should be done regularly (once a
month)
EYE WASH
• Can be set right by the eye
position.

• Do not use sterile bottles that

have been opened, immediately
replace with new sterile bottle.
Fume Hood
•Ventilation system
•Gas line have to "hold fire“
•Function of vertical type door is
not falling, and horizontal type
door is easy to be opened
•Alarm, if there is a function of
the damaged
•Window fume hood are always
in a closed condition
•Not a place to store chemicals
Work table lab
Equipped with lip table
Material: Melamine
laminate or ceramic
composites
equipped by the sewer
Electrical installation are
equipped with "ground“
Equipped with on-off
switch
Having a source of
emergency electrical "power
emergency"

Chemical Laboratory

SAFETY SIGN

Regulations in the lab

SAFETY SIGN
There are three basic sign categories:
• regulatory;
• information;
• warning
Permission
allows an action
Prohibition
prohibits an action
Regulatory Mandatory
A circle indicates that an requires an action
order is in force
Fire
provides information on fire equipment
First Aid/Safety Equipment
provides information on first aid and
safety equipment
Information Information
A square provides provides general information or
information directions

Caution
indicates potential risk
Danger
warns against definite danger, that can cause
Warning
irreversible and serious injury, or death
A triangle indicates caution Radiation
or danger indicates radiation risk
Regulations in the lab

No eating or drinking
in the lab

Handle everything as
if it's pathogenic
Keep flame and
flammable solutions
far apart

Keep electrical
equipment far from
water
Always clean glassware
before you use it

5. Clean spills from

the outside IN
9. Check all waterbaths with
a thermometer before
putting your hand into the
water.

10. All sharps (needles,

razors, pins, toothpicks)
should be discarded in a
sturdy container
Be careful weighing out chemicals
and reagents

proper safety protection

--- fume hood,
goggles, gloves
Do not put bags and other items on the
floor of the laboratory
Fume Hood–
Not a place to store chemicals !!!
Gas cylinder near to fume hood
Do not place gas
cylinders for fume
hoods in the
laboratory
Deficiencies in TKA
• The top of the rack cabinet and the board is not free of storage
tems.
• Gas pipe, pipes are not labeled with the identity of their
content
• The exits are not clearly marked
• The exit is not free from interference / obstacles.
• The phone can not be labeled with the emergency number
• Emergency evacuation routes are not clearly stated.
Overplus
• Floors are not slippery
• Relative net
• There is a special room for material storage
• Good air circulation
• Adequate lighting
• safety equipment is complete
How to improve it
• Programs should make the implementation of
safety during work in the chemical laboratory
became a major
• Programs must evaluate the application of the
principles of security and safety are periodically
• Increase awareness of students with classroom
teaching
• Provides sanctions for noncompliance students to
the discipline
• Pay tribute to students who successfully run the
discipline of chemical laboratories during the
practicum
• Students replace or repair equipment damaged
during the practicum
conclution
• general procedure in chemical laboratory
should be applicated by every individual that
work in chemical laboratory and be guarded
by lecturer and in the wider line by system. we
would better prevent than overcome. Increase
your awarness because accident can be
happend every time
