owners of “New Amsterdam”, which
was later named New York, after the
Duke of York.
The governor was appointed by the
King of England and the assembly
was elected by local citizens.
More common people were able to

History
In 1624 the Colony was established by
the Dutch as “The New Netherlands”.
During the 1500s and the 1600s, many
people came to the colony to escape
religious persecution from nations such
as Germany and Scotland, making the
colony unique for being extremely
diverse. Later, King Charles II of
England absorbed the colony peacefully
from the Dutch and it was renamed
New York. During this time there were
many conflicts between England and
France, and in 1763 all territory east of
the Mississippi was signed over to
England by the Treaty of Paris. Even
though the territory was conquered by
the English, New York still carried
many Dutch characteristics and
Individuality in its diverse population.

4 Economy
To obtain the necessities of colonial life,
citizens would take on occupations of
farming,iron mining, printers, clockmakers,
barbers, tanners, menders, and dyers.
Farmers supplied food to common people, so
the country was well-balanced and people
were typically nourished enough, due to the
abundance of crops and job opportunities
that the citizens were provided. The
illustrious natural landscape was an
amazing advantage of Colonial New York,
as the working people were able to trade
their harvested resources and have enough
for themselves.
Iron was sent to England, this was the most
common form of exporting goods. With
relation to triangular trade, harvested
resources, specifically iron, were harvested
and sent to England. This was also a sign of
obedience to England, as The New York
Colony supplied England with natural
resources to make tools.
IRON, timber, cattle, corn, wheat, and fish
were the most recognizable resources traded
and obtained from the natural world of
colonial New York.

Sociology
Although the main religion was
Protestantism, there was tolerance of
religious diversity. Quakers, Jews, and
Catholics were all welcomed.
Colonists lived in simple structures made
out of Brick and tiled roofs.
They also made many tools such as kettles
and nails and became a large export of iron
tools. Culturally, education was highly
valued and most children, rich or poor were
able to go to school.
Colonists also had a system of hierarchy in
their food! Bread was mainly eaten by
both the rich and the poor.... The poorer
colonists ate grainy breads such as rye,
while wealthier families ate smoother
white bread. Bread and Baked goods
became so popular in New York, the
Natives often traded with colonists
between crops such as corn, for pretzels
and cookies!
