ST ELIZABETH OF HUNGARY

Early Life
• Born on July 7, 1207 in Sárospatak, Hungary
• At a young age, Elizabeth was sent away to study
• Her mother was murdered and this broke her heart and completely changed her view
on life and death
• It caused her to turn to God and she was able to find her peace through prayer
• Soon after, she married Ludwig IV of Thuringia and her mourning was turned to
happiness.
After marriage
• Elizabeth lives a life of prayer while serving the poor
• She practiced penance every day and devoted her life to charity
• Since she was queen, she was able to use this position to her advantage and advance
her charity mission
• Franciscan Friars told her about a man named Francis of Assisi
• After hearing about the amazing things he had done, she decided
she wanted to live her life just like his.
Religious Life
• Every day, she would set aside time to deliver bread to the poor.
• Suddenly, disease and flood came upon her and her people.
• She built a hospital to provide for them. She also gave out food and clothes as needed to
the people.
• Sadly, in 1227, Elizabeth’s husband dies and her heart was broken
• She promised never to marry again
• She decided to become a nun.
• Her vows included and an agreement of complete obedience to her confessor and
spiritual director.
• She was so devoted to the church that she offered to cut off her nose so that no man
would ever want to marry her
The St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church
• This church is located in Marburg
• It is said that it was built by the Teutonic knights
over the tomb of Saint Elizabeth, making it a
center of pilgrimage.
• it was built with a high altar and stained glass
windows.
While she was alive
• While Elizabeth of Hungary was alive, the event of the fourth crusades happened
• This event lasted for about 2 years and it was when the Crusaders of Western
Europe invaded and conquered the Christian city of Constantinople.
• In May 1200 the Treaty of Le Goulet was signed between France and England
• This treaty settled the claims the king of England had on French lands
