POPULATION: They have slightly fewer
100,000 females worldwide,

other sea turtle species.
LIFESPAN
Very little is known of the
species' lifespan. Some reports
claim "30 years or more",while
others state "50 years or more“.
Upper estimates exceed 100
years.

THREATS TO SURVIVAL: eating a jellyfish

Many leatherbacks meet

an early end due to human
activity. They get stuck in
fishing lines and nets, or
are struck by boats.

Leatherbacks also can die

if they ingest floating
plastic debris mistaken for
their favorite food:
jellyfish.

MANTEES o HABITAT AND RANGE: Found in
shallow, slow-moving rivers,
estuaries, saltwater bays, canals, and
coastal areas — particularly where
sea grass beds or freshwater
vegetation flourish. Manatees are a
migratory species

o POPULATION:
The manatee population 6,300.

o LIFESPAN
In fact, it is possible for manatees to
live up to 60 years or more. One
manatee living in captivity is now
over 65 years old.

One species that is being
conserved in Trinidad and Tobago
is the Ocelot
o HABITAT: Ocelots live in a variety of habitats:
I. mangrove forests,
II. coastal marshes,
III. savannah grasslands,
IV. pastures,
V. thorn scrub and
VI. tropical forests.

All of these habitats provide only live in areas

with dense vegetative cover.

o POPULATION:
An estimated 800,000 to 1.5 million are found
worldwide.

o LIFESPAN: In captivity, ocelots can live 20

years while in the wild they live seven to ten
years.

the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, the EMA has
been declaring species of Trinidad and Tobago to
be protected through its Environmentally
Sensitive Species Rules.

These rules basically protect any animal species:
 That is indigenous in Trinidad and Tobago for a part or all
of its life
 If they are in danger of extinction or cannot survive on its
own

It is required to be protected for the

purpose of meeting the Government’s
international obligations as well.

 White Tailed Sabrewing Hummingbird

The Sabrewings are NO LONGER under any threat by human activities that are taking place in the Main
Ridge Forest Reserve in Tobago. The reserve it self has been protected since 1765 and the Department of
Natural Resource and the Environment (DNRE) has been ensuring that the reserve remains intact. There are
no problems of illegal logging or habitat loss as a result of human activities.
