Cells

Day 1
GMAS Practice
• The appendix is an example of a
________ ___________

A. homologous structure
B. old structure
C. vestigial structure
D. DNA sequence
Standard S7L2
Students will describe (explain; tell) the
structure (formation) and function (job;
role) of cells, tissues, organs, and organ
systems.
Element B
Relate (connect; link) cell structures
(cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm,
chloroplasts, mitochondria) to basic
cell functions (jobs).
Essential Question
• How are plant and animal cells
structured?
What is a Cell?
• Cell: The smallest unit that is able to
perform the basic functions of life.

– Can be unicellular (single celled) or multi-

cellular.
Unicellular
• Organisms that are made of a single
cell are often referred to as single
celled organisms.

– Ex. bacteria
Multi-Cellular
• Organisms made up of many cells are
referred to as multi-cellular
organisms.

– Ex. Humans, frogs, dogs, etc.

1’s & 2’s
• 1’s ask 2’s what is a unicellular organism

• 2’s ask 1’s what is a multicellular

organism
How Can We See Cells?
• Cells can’t be viewed with the naked eye
• Cells can be viewed with a microscope
(an instrument which makes an object
appear bigger than it is).
• Robert Hooke gave the cell its name.
• He discovered them while looking at a
cork under a microscope. He saw tiny
room like structures and called the cells.
Magnification
• The power of the eyepiece and the
objective lens determine the total
magnification of a microscope.
– Eyepiece lens power= 10
– Objective lens power= 43
– Total magnification= 430X

• 10x43= 430
Partners
• Working with your partner calculate the
magnification of a microscope using the
following information.

eyepiece lens power= 10x

objective lens power= 52x
Total magnification= 520x
Cell Theory
• All organisms are made up of one or
more cells

• The cell is the basic unit of

organization in organisms

• All cells come from other living cells

Plant Cells
• Nucleus • Golgi Bodies
• Cytoplasm • Vacuole
• Mitochondria • Cell Membrane
• Lysosomes • Chloroplast
• Endoplasmic • Cell Wall
Reticulum • More square in
• Ribosomes shape
Animal Cell
• Nucleus • Golgi Bodies
• Cytoplasm • Vacuole
• Mitochondria • Cell Membrane
• Lysosomes • No Chloroplast
• Endoplasmic • No Cell Wall
Reticulum • More round in shape
• Ribosomes
•Video
Foldable
• Complete a foldable for the first set of
vocabulary words on your student learning
