The origins of coffe

RAMIRO PÉREZ COVARRUBIAS

 Coffee, that stimulating and aromatic drink so
widespread in the world, finds it´s origin in the lands of
Abyssinia (now Ethiopia). Fruit of a bush called coffee
tree, it´s name comes from the Ethiopian city of Caffa.
 A legend attributes his discovery to a local shepherd
named Kaldi, who observed the revival effect exerted
on his goats after eating some red fruits from a bush.
After trying them himself he felt more vigor and energy.
 Although in all likelihood, African tribes knew him from
antiquity using the ground grains to feed the animals,
give strength to his warriors, and endure the long
religious ceremonies. It´s popularity would come after
the introduction of this in Arabia, where Yemen would
become an important center of cultivation and
distribution throughout the Muslim world.
 By 1583 coffee was already present in Persia, Egypt,
Africa, Turkey, and the Middle East. And by 1615 he had
arrived in Europe. Coffee crossed the Atlantic in 1689,
with the opening of the first establishment in Boston. The
drink gained popularity and obtained the rank of
national drink.
 In Russia and Germany there were difficulties in getting
coffee because it was considered a drug or stimulant
and the consumption of this was punishable by death.
 At present, the main coffee producing regions are South
America (in particular, Brazil, Colombia and Peru),
Vietnam, Kenya and Cote d'Ivoire. Hawaii has a small
production of high quality coffee and high price, but
among the many varieties developed, the most
expensive and famous coffee is still Blue Mountain from
Jamaica.
