Rizal wrote his first poem "My First Inspiration" at a young age, dedicating it to his mother for her birthday. This marked the beginning of his poetic career, as his mother's imprisonment had previously cast a gloom over his heart, preventing him from writing poetry. Upon her release in 1874, his poetic talents were inspired to sing again. During his time as a student at Ateneo, Father Sanchez further encouraged Rizal's gift for poetry. Over the next few years, Rizal went on to write over a dozen poems on various topics, with his last being a farewell poem to his classmates before finishing his studies at Ateneo in 1877.
