Settling Chamber: a design

approach
ADITYA PRANA ISWARA M.SC
ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING
An Overview
Long used by industry for removing solid or liquid
particles from gaseous streams, settling chambers have the
advantages of simple construction, low initial cost, low
maintenance, low pressure drop and simple disposal of
collected materials.
Limited to the removal of particles larger than about 40-
60 µm diameter
 Pre-cleaner for other particle control devices
Settling Chamber Types

Simple expansion chamber

multiple-tray settling chamber

Component; Momentum Separator

Momentum separators
cause the gas to
change directions
and add a downward
inertial force to
supplement the
gravitational force.
Advance
Low Capital Cost Excellent Reliability
Very Low Energy Cost Low Pressure Drop
No Moving Parts Device Not Subject to Abrasion
Few Maintenance RequirementProvide Incidental Cooling of
Gas Stream
Low Operating Cost
Dry Collection and Disposal
Disadvantages
Relatively Low PM Collection Efficiencies
Unable to Handle Sticky Material
Large Physical Size
Trays in Multiple Tray Settling Chamber may Wrap

Example
Estimate collection efficiency of a 75 µm diameter
particle in a simple settling chamber with 3m wide
by 2m high by 6 m long when gas velocity via
chamber is 7 m/s. Assuming a particle density is 70
kg/m3 and gas stream condition of 60oC and 1 atm.
