FILIPINO PSYCHOLOGY

Sikolohiyang Pilipino -is a psychology that is


based on the experiences, idea, and orientation
of the Filipino, understood from a Filipino
perspective

or Catalonan (priests/priestess)
were the first Filipino
psychologists; they have their
unique way of healing with
the use of : dalangin (prayer),
bulong(whisper), anting-
anting (amulet)

 1961 Psychology was taught as part of
philosophy
 Growth of psychology was greatest at the end of
World War II. (1945)
 Estefania Aldaba-Lim established the Institute of
Human Relations at the PWU
 Virgilio G. Enriquez known as the Father of
Filipino Psychology "Ama ng Sikolohiyang
Pilipino", established Organization of Filipino
Psychology in 1975.
 Analyze and confront social problems, not
from a western perspective but from
indigenous Filipino viewpoint.
 Seeks to explain Philippine realities and takes
into account the cultural characteristics,
peculiarities and distinct values of the
Filipinos
 Pakapakapa (groping)- field method
 Pagtatanung-tanong (questioning)
 Pakikiramdam (shared sensitivity)
 Pakikialam (concerned interference)
 Pakikilahok (participation as one-with-the-
other)
 Pakikisangkot (integral involvement)
 Padalaw-dalaw (casual but repeated visits)
Filipinos possess the following values that shows
curious contradictions which foreigners are prone
to misunderstand:
 PAKIKISAMA
“interpersonal relationship”
 UTANG NA LOOB
“gratitude/solidarity”
 KAHIHIYAN / HIYA
“propriety”
 BAHALA NA
“determination & risk taking”
Think of a trait or
characteristic that is
considered as “tatak pinoy”.
Here are characteristics that are distinctly Pinoy:
1. Everybody loves to sing even those who cannot
carry a tune. Anywhere you go, you’re definitely
sure to find a karaoke machine commonly known
as videoke.
2. Filipinos love to entertain. They are very
hospitable that they’d even go the extra mile just
to make sure a visitor’s enjoying his/her stay.
3. A party to Filipinos mean food, drinks,
singing, some dancing, and more
FOOD!
4. Education is top priority,
but parents believe that it is the best
intangible gift they could ever give to
their children.
5. Most women are obsessed at having
fair skin. Whitening products appeal to
women, promising them fairer, whiter
skin.
7. Filipinos often use their lips to point to an
object or a person nearby.
8. Being friendly and thoughtful, they’d invite
anyone to join them for a meal. Of course,
they don’t expect the invited to actually join
them.
9. Giving nicknames are considered a person’s
way of being sweet so on average,
a Filipino has five different pet names. Most
common are Baby which often become Bebe or
Bibi or Biboy or Bigirl. And of course, the
repeated syllabic names like Kring-kring,
Bongbong, Peypey, Tingting, or, the
current president’s name, Noynoy.
