FILTRATION

REQUIREMENTS
BY: Nikki Anne Andaya
 It is founded in 1944, mission is to protect and
NSF improve global human health. It helps to
INTERNATIONAL develop public health standards and
certifications that help protect food, water,
consumer products and the environment.
 ANSI/NSF standards are issued in two different
sets, one for health concerns (such as removal
of specific contaminants) and one for aesthetic
concerns (such as improving taste or
appearance of water).
Filtration
Three NSF standards cover filtration
systems: NSF/ANSI 42, NSF/ANSI 53
and NSF/ANSI 401.
NSF/ANSI 42:
Drinking  NSF/ANSI 42 establishes the minimum requirements
for the certification of POU/POE filtration systems
Water designed to reduce specific aesthetic or non-health-
Treatment related contaminants (chlorine, taste, odor and
particulates) that may be present in public or private
Units - drinking water. These filters basically make your water
Aesthetic more palatable.
Effects
 The most common products certified only to
this standard are water pitcher filters and
refrigerator filters.
NSF/ANSI 53:
Drinking  NSF/ANSI 53 , designed to reduce specific health-
Water related contaminants, such as Cryptosporidium, Giardia,
lead, volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) and MTBE
Treatment (methyl tertiary-butyl ether), that may be present in
Units - Health public or private drinking water.

Effects
 These filters are typically installed below the sink. Some products
may have two or three filters; others may have a single, more
powerful solid carbon block filter.
NSF/ANSI  NSF/ANSI 401 addresses the ability of a water
treatment device to remove contaminants which have
401: been identified in published studies as occurring in
Emerging drinking water.
Compounds/  This is a new standard that was developed in reaction
to the public's concern over pharmaceuticals being
Incidental found in our tap water.
Contaminants
 The most common product certified to this standard is
a carbon filter that would be used under the sink, on
the countertop or inline for a refrigerator.
NSF International and other organizations have been developed,
that establish minimum requirements for the safety and
performance to treat water.
