FILIPINOS.

Malnutrition

A condition that results from eating a diet in which

nutrients are either not enough or are too much such
that the diet causes health problems

Micronutrient Deficiency
A lack of essential vitamins and minerals required in small
amounts by the body for proper growth and development.
Micronutrients include, but are not limited to: Vitamins A, B, C and
D. Calcium.
Effects of micronutrient
deficiency
Micronutrient Functions Deficiency
Vitamin A For vision, healthy skin, bone Night Blindness, Xerophthalmia
development, and immune
system
Vitamin D Proper absorption of calcium Pain in bone and muscle,
Increase risk of cardiovascular
disease
Vitamin B Complex For nervous system, digestive Poor muscle functions,
system, and skin Dysfuntion of nervous system
Calcium For bone formation and Weakening of bones, weak and
contributes to normal brain brittle nails
function
Iron For production of red blood cells Anemia, frequent infections,
brittle nails
Iodine Normal metabolism of cells Goiter, thyroid glands
enlargement
Vitamin D
The proportion of adults, 20 years and over with deficient and
insufficient levels of vitamin D was found to be highest in
Benguet at 60.3% and lowest in Cagayan at 19.5%.

Vitamin A
Among children 6 months to 5 years old, the prevalence of VAD
is 15.2%
Among pregnant women and lactating mothers, the prevalence
rates are 9.5% and 6.4% respectively, both are considered mild
public health problems.

Iron
Anemia rates in all population groups have been declining over
the past 2 to 3 NNSs. Infants 6 months to 1 year of age still
have the highest anemia rates1 (39.4%) among population
groups

Micronutrient Deficiency in Rich areas
Severe Micronutrient
deficiencies can cause severe
diseases.

Frequent Disease Affects the

overall human growth and
development.
1. Overweight is directly
proportional to wealth

2.Stunting, underweight
and wasting are directly
proportional to wealth

3. Children of poor
families are the most
affected by malnutrition
Micronutrient deficiency in poor areas
-Poor filipino families do not have enough
financial resources to provide nutritious
meals

-Unavailability of other resources to

provide their basic human needs

-Manual labor with inadequate food intake

causes stress and decreases the
absorption of micronutrients

-Lack of Government support to end

poverty and hunger
Micronutrient deficiency in financially
capable areas
- Poor diet can lead to
obesity
-Some prefer food chains
to save time. Foods
provided are not nutrient-
densed foods
-Lack of knowledge or
concern on nutrition
-Stress decreases the
absorption of micro
nutrients
Too little, too much: The problem with double
burden malnutrition

• most children's food

intake is either
continuously insufficient
or in excess of dietary
energy requirements.

Genetic factors may affect micro
nutrient absorption
Thalassemia
a genetic blood disorder
where individuals who
have the disease are not
able to produce
sufficient hemoglobin
which causes severe
anemia
