Capacity Simulations Introduction

•Capacity Simulations are performed as Monte-Carlo

simulations
– Random distribution of UEs as per traffic map
– Users are using various services in proportion of the service mix

•Simulation task require to set properly 2 kind of parameters

• Monte Carlo Simulator Parameters

▪ To get reliable results at all
• Service setting parameters
▪ To get results reflecting intent services and capacity
▪ To apply services used in dimensioning

How the Simulations Work?

•During one iteration:

•Mobiles are spread
•Tx powers are adjusted
•Each mobile reach either
•Acceptable connection
•Go to outage

•Better to do set of several

simulations and averagre
results (5-10 simulations)

Perform MC Simulations
Multiple simulations can be defined at one time.
Click Data tab->LTE Simulations->New, in the pop-up window
• General tab
• Specify a name for the simulation studies
• Specify the number of simulations. Multiple simulations result in better statitics.
• Specify the max allowed UL and DL traffic load constraints in cell level

Better to use more

simulations and average
those. 5 to 10
siumulations

Capacity Modeling

•Capacity figures are expected to meet requirements

– Dimensioning results/requirements
– Operator requirements

•Atoll is able to simulate scenario with different services in

parallel. Default services are:
– FTP Download
– Video Conferencing
– VoIP
– Web Browsing
•Natural way to meet traffic and traffic requirements is to
translate such requirements into four defaulted services and
their parameters.

Capacity Modeling

•Traffic characteristics has 2 dimensions:

• Proportion of traffic services (traffic mix)
• Intensity of traffic
– Per user
– Per area – one need to have density of active users from
▪ Operator data or
▪ Demographic expectations or
▪ Dimensioning tool output

How to Translate Traffic into Atoll?

•One mobile (in Atoll) could be connected just with one service
(eg. no ftp and VoIP in parallel).
•Calls per hour number is connected with probability of making
call – thus, 1 call per hour means 100% probability. To have
service mix, there is need to put proportion in calls per hour and
increase number of users.

•Thus, to make proportion between calls – 4 services, let use

flat 0.25 calls/hr value and 4 times more subscriber.

•Traffic in Atoll is weighted per probabilities to occupy

connection. The distribution of services per mobiles copy such
probability as a trend. This is reason to do more simulations
and average those.

Is cell capacity in Atoll in line with Dynamic
System Level Simulations?

For internal use

What to expect from capacity results from MC
simulator? Are those figures correct?

Basic principle is to compare cell capacity results with dynamic

system level simulation results (i.e. with the dimensioning
figures as LTE dimensiong tool use figures from simulations)
MC simulations represent/generate load.
Cell throughput figures from MC simulator to be in line or close
to those from dimensioning figures.
Most easy is to compare spectral efficiency coming from MC
simulator with the expected one from dimensioning (system
level simulations).
Test scenario to be hexagonal one as on the next slide.
Hexagonal scenario gives good control over results as cells
there are similar and not distorted by terrain or clutter type.

Example of MC results check: 57 Cell scenario, 2km inter
site distance, 750 MHz, NSN (Voice+Data) default traffic

•Expected Spectral
efficiency is 1bit/Hz for 10
MHz bandwidth (from
dimensioning)
•Monte Carlo simulator
results in Atoll have
saturation point about 1.07
bit/Hz
•Thus MC simulator is
delivering reasonable
capacity figures.

Capacity figures to be
collected from the central
site/cells to prevent
boundary effects
