Learning Outcomes
• Describe the application of biotechnology in chemical
engineering and its economic feasibility.
Definitions
Biotechnology: the use development of methods of direct
genetic manipulation for a socially desirable goal, such as
product better plants/seeds or using specially designed or
genism to degrade wastes.
Biochemical Engineering:
Bioprocess Engineering:
Biocatalysis:
Microbial Diversity
Organisms can be found almost anywhere and can exist
in extreme condition.
Organisms can be classified based on:
Shape – coccus (cocci), bacillus (bacili), spirillum (spirilla)
Habitat – temperature (psychrophiles, mesophiles, thermophiles) ,
pH, moisture/nutrient content (cyanobacteria)
Metabolic capabilities – aerobic, anaerobic, facultative
Microbial Taxonomy
Organisms
Eucaryotes
Viruses Procaryotes
Animalia Monera
Protista Plantae
Fungi (insects, (bacteria and
(protozoa) (algae)
vertebrates) cynobacteria)
