Robeson County Public Health Dept.

Innovative Approaches

Case Presentation
Case Background

O I work with children and young adults within a group setting.

O These individuals all have a special need or disability.

O I work to provide vital information to the families of these

individuals. This could include IEP prep, social services, as
well as resources to help for their child’s future.
What are some biases you had going into the interview?

O Prior to beginning my work with special needs

children's and their families I did not have any

biases.
What were some value differences between you and
the client?

O With working with some parents, I often felt

that there was a lack of effort from the family

when it can to helping this child succeed.

O These parents often leaned upon the staff and

myself to make sure that their child was

having their needs met.
What events or life experiences have shaped them
into the person they are?

O Special Needs individuals often have a medical,

behavioral, developmental, learning, or mental health

condition.

O While there are no major experience, sometimes these

conditions can be inherited, or the result of potential

drug use.
What is the staff recommendation about diagnosis,
interventions or treatment?

O While working with individuals with special

needs, our main focus is helping the family with

making the proper decisions within the
community. This includes education, as well as
therapeutic needs.
What does research say on their
diagnosis/problem/treatment?

While the Federal Government does not have an official definition of

"special needs," States define the term "special needs" differently for
purposes of children's eligibility to receive Federal Assistance.

Types of Special Needs:

Medical Behavioral

What changes do recommend for the agency or
services?

O During my internship I have found the agency to be

well managed and dedicated to working with the clients

and their family to provide the best service and
resources available.

and Professional Behavior
O Make ethical decisions by applying the standards of the NASW Code of Ethics, relevant

laws and regulations, models for ethical decision-making, ethical conduct of research, and

additional codes of ethics as appropriate to context.

O Use reflection and self-regulation to manage personal values and maintain professionalism

in practice situations.

O Demonstrate professional demeanor in behavior; appearance; and oral, written, and

electronic communication.

O Use supervision and consultation to guide professional judgment and behavior

Competency 7: Assess Individuals, Families,
Groups, Organizations, and Communities

O Collect and organize data, and apply critical thinking to

interpret information from clients and constituencies.

O Apply knowledge of human behavior and the social

environment, person-in-environment, and other
multidisciplinary theoretical frameworks in interventions
with clients and constituencies.
