It’s purpose is to monitor foetal well-being & allow early detection of foetal
distress.
The most popular structure can be remembered using the acronym DR C BRAVADO
DR – Define Risk
C – Contractions
BRa – Baseline Rate
V – Variability
A – Accelerations
D – Decelerations
O – Overall impression
Define risk
Increased variability:
• the oscillations exceed 25 bpm.
• This pattern is sometimes called a saltatory pattern, most often seen during the
second stage of labor. Usually not an indication for immediate delivery.
• usually caused by acute hypoxia or mechanical compression of the umbilical cord.
• Especially when paired with decelerations, should warn the physician to look for and
try to correct possible causes of acute hypoxia and to be alert for signs that the
hypoxia is progressing to acidosis. Although it is a nonreassuring pattern.19
Accelerations are an abrupt increase in baseline heart rate of >15 bpm for >15
seconds.
