Chapter 1
Introduction
IMPLEMENTING AN EFFECTIVE WASTE SEGREGATION
IN HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL: CENTER OF CATHOLIC
EDUCATION

According to UNEP (2011: 292)

“Every year, an
estimated 11.2
billion tons of
solid waste are
collected
worldwide”
IMPLEMENTING AN EFFECTIVE WASTE SEGREGATION
IN HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL: CENTER OF CATHOLIC
EDUCATION

Clark and Matharu (2013: 66) insist that:

“The planet currently

generates approximately
1.3 Gigatons (Gt) of solid
waste per year, which is
expected to increase to
2.2Gt by 2025.”

IN HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL: CENTER OF CATHOLIC
EDUCATION

Solid waste disposal and management is both an urban and rural

problem.

Because every person is

a potential generator of
waste and a contributor
to this problem.

IN HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL: CENTER OF CATHOLIC
EDUCATION

• The condition of the waste management system in Holy Trinity School needs

immediate and collective action for as the population of the students grow, the more

waste they generate. Also, there is an inadequate facility and there is no existing

segregation awareness or campaign (i.e. signages such as Reduce, Reuse. Recycle,

etc.) for better information dissemination, and because the law has obligated the

communities to do so purposely. The enactment of RA 9003, otherwise known as

the Ecological Solid Waste Management (ESWM) Act of 2000, provides for an

Ecological Solid Waste Management.

The Republic Act 9003 (ESWM)

Ecological Solid Waste Management

a law that was passed in the 26th of January in the year of 2001.
It mandates all to adapt a systematic, comprehensive and
ecological solid waste management which would ensure protection
of public health and the environment.

Area Of Study

• Holy Trinity School; Center of Catholic Education, established in

the year 2009. Located within the area of Manibaug Porac,
Pampanga.

General Objective

• is to explore the percentages and means of the waste that

students dispose as part of the whole solid waste management
in Holy Trinity School; CCE,

IN HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL: CENTER OF CATHOLIC
EDUCATION

Specific objectives

• To find out what more the students think they can do apart
from what they are currently contributing.
• To explore the challenges about waste segregation faced by
the HTS; CCE.
• To launch procedures within the school to improve student’s
participation for better waste management in HTS; CCE.
• To identify what are the students’ opinions and perceptions
that should be done by the school for a better practices in
waste management.

Statement of the Problem

• This study aims to determine the relationship of Student’s

Perception and the Waste Management implementation in Holy
Trinity School: CCE

• Specifically, this answers the following questions:

Significance of the Study

Teachers and Educators.

This will beneficial to the teachers and educators as it will give

them an idea on waste management. It will also serve as
awareness for them to take measures to resolve issues and
other topics that have resemblances with this study.

Students.

This is to show awareness to students to become responsible in

disposing trashes and will mandated and encouraged to
segregate their wastes accordingly into their categories to
attain proper waste management.

to be awaken to the real problem and to fully acknowledge
and take their responsibilities of their own wastes.

The Principal and Prefect of Discipline

are responsible for:

• Compliance with this policy at school;

• Ensuring reprimands or confiscation of I.D.’s resulting from non-
compliance;
• Interacting with contracted solid waste haulers regarding
school’s waste collection and contract management concerns.
• Coordinating transportation of waste products from the school
to the MRF in Porac for compostable usage or disposal.

The School Administrators are responsible

for:

• Performing evaluation of waste management component as

part of their quality control site inspections;
• Providing instructional support and guidance to staffs, teachers
and students on responsibilities for managing solid waste.

Utilities/Janitors are responsible for:

• Removing waste materials from waste containers and

ensuring they are placed into the appropriate bin;
• Inspecting trash bins regularly and reporting deficiencies to
the administrators;
• Ensuring clear access and inspecting bins regularly and
ensuring that they are maintained in a clean & accessible
condition.

Faculty Personnel are responsible for:

• Providing support to students regarding implementation of

waste segregation procedures;
• Promote and encourage environmental stewardship within
the school;
• Emphasize environmental stewardship when opportunities
arise in the curriculum.

Biodegradable wastes
• would be into a converted into a compostable material such
as fertilizers for economical purposes. The school may opt to
put up a back yard organic farm where it could become a

Chapter 4
Conclusion
IMPLEMENTING AN EFFECTIVE WASTE SEGREGATION
IN HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL: CENTER OF CATHOLIC
EDUCATION

• Wastes are disposed 24/7 despite of their kinds such as:

plastic, paper, aluminum, and etc.
• There is an existing waste management and the students and
staffs have the awareness about it that only needs to be
improved for the fully adaption of the waste segregation
• Gleaning from the above discussion, it is realized at this point
that waste management program contains tough
requirements for it to be accomplished.
IMPLEMENTING AN EFFECTIVE WASTE SEGREGATION
IN HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL: CENTER OF CATHOLIC
EDUCATION

• Looking at the details, there are so many constraints in this

implementation, especially in terms of budget.

• One factor to have an effective waste management, it has to

carry out collection and disposal of garbage in the most
sanitary manner possible.

• Increasing amount of Solid Wastes at school presents greater

challenges. With increasing population of students,
consumption of things and negligence of responsibility on the
issue gets to worsen the problem.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Based from the findings of the study, the

researcher offers the following recommendations:
IMPLEMENTING AN EFFECTIVE WASTE SEGREGATION
IN HOLY TRINITY SCHOOL: CENTER OF CATHOLIC
EDUCATION

1. A symposium with the students and concerned personnel

(utilities and faculty) to create awareness and explain to them
the proper waste segregation in waste disposal.

2. To put up cost-effective segregation stations on strategic

locations within the vicinity of the school campus for the
effective implementation of waste segregation for a successful
waste management.

3. Create waste segregation awareness or campaign (i.e. signages

such as Reduce, Reuse. Recycle, etc.) for better information
dissemination and education specially to students in order to
lessen the problem on waste disposal.

4. Strict enforcement of waste segregation and disposal with

implementation of corresponding disciplinary sanctions to those
who fail to correctly dispose their waste. (i.e. community
services, attend seminars on environment and waste
management etc.)

5. Formulation of waste management procedures. A systematic

procedure from collection, segregation, handling to disposal of
waste.
