1. During the different phases of Indian history, the dimension of city growth have shows that migration has been very
important component as cities were centres of trade, manufacturing and services.
2. People migrate to cities not only for work, but also on business, education, marriages, natural disasters and
conflicts etc.
3. Heterogeneity is hall mark of cities and innovations
4. The Indian government guarantees freedom of movement and freedom to settle within the territory as a
fundamental right of all citizens.
5. Migrants face barriers in terms of access to civic amenities, housing and employment, as well as restrictions on
their political and cultural rights because of cultural differences.
6. Migrants are all the more vulnerable to discrimination and exploitation as many of them are poor, illiterate and live
in slums and hazardous locations prone to disaster and natural calamities.
7. Migration rises a central issue for the right to the city.
8. The right to city advocates proactive strategies to include migrants in the decision making process, recognizing
their contribution as valued urban citizens.
1. The share of in- migrants in the population of urban areas has increased from 31.6% in 1983 to 35% in 2007-08
2. Females migrate on account of marriage, many of them take up work, joining migrant workers in urban areas
3. Male migrant workers in urban areas has remained constant.
4. Employment migration of males increased from 42% in 1993 to 52% in 1999-2000
5. Various streams of migration into such as rural to rural, rural to urban, urban to rural and urban to urban,
employment related reasons go as high as 62% in the case of male rural to urban migration
1. In 1911, Kolkata became the million plus city followed by Mumbai and by 2001, there were 35 million plus
cities in India, in which 38 % of the total urban population resided.
2. Rise in number of million plus cities and the concentration of population in urban areas signifies migrants in
city.
3. Migrants in cities and urban centres are predominantly engaged in the informal sector, doing a variety of
work such as construction, hawkers & vendors, domestic servants etc.
4. The majority are either self employed or casual workers.
5. About 30% of migrant workers are working as casual workers and only 35% are employed as regular/
salaried workers
1. A seasonal or temporary migrant is defined as “ the household member who has stayed away from the
village/town for a period of one month or more but less than six months during the last 365 days, for
employment or in search of employment”
2. The seasonal/temporary migration is more prevalent among the socio-economically deprived groups such as
scheduled casts and scheduled tribes, and among the poorest of the poor and landless households.
