 Every day many vehicles are waiting at toll booths. The
factors are:
 1. Payment slow
 2. There was congestion

 If using automatic toll system can:

 1. Relieve congestion
 2. No need to carry cash
 3. Vehicles are not accumulate
 4. System environment friendly
 This paper represents the design and development of
“Micro controller based automatic toll collection
system”.

 This is a micro controllerbased automatic system using

infrared sensors.

 Automatic toll collection system aims to collect tolls

from the vehicle without making the vehicle stop at a
tollbooth .
 To design an automatic toll collection system should use:

 1. IR sensor
 2. Transmitter and receiver circuit
 3. Microcontroller
 4. Visual Basic
 IR sensors are used for a very affordable price.

 Vehicles must have a transmitter, if it is detected the user must

press the button on the transmitter to match the data and
payment.

 The operator will use Visual Basic to display the details of

vehicle users.

 If the data is correct then the payment will take place portal
opens

 All the process of matching the code and the above

transactions should take place without stopping the car.

 A. Hardware Implementation

 1. Transmitter Circuit
◦ In this circuit, the transmitter circuit works off at 5V supply.
It is build around IC NE555, which is wired in astable mode
(at pin 39) to generate 38 KHz frequency.

1. IC NE555
2. IC MAX212 ( connect to IR )
3. POWER SUPPLY
4. MICROCONTROLER
2. Receiver Circuit

 The receiver circuit comprises of IR sensor TSOP1738,

89C51, power supply; LCD display and a PC interface [23]

 Stepper motor is interfaced through L297 controller with

micro controller
 (Port 0) to open and close the door for legitimate user.
Main Component Receiver Circuit
B. Software Implementation

1. Microcontroller
 Microcontroller is a chip that serves as controller and general
electronic circuits can store programs therein.

 The microcontroller chosen for the development system was

the AT89C51RD2BD

 The AT89C51 has 64K of program memory and has the

capability to write to its own memory
IV. Progamming, Result and Methodology

 Some stages to register or fill data (token) on

the transmitter that is connected with the
operator.

form filled by Toll Operator for Sucessful code transferred from

User Computer to Transmitter
Token numbers has been transferred
successfully to receiver.

When any car comes, this has transmitter mounted over it. The user
presses a button; a data transfer will take place. The receiver will match a
data with a data stored in its memory.

If the data is correct, the money will be deducted according the toll rates.
Portal will open and the car pass. But if the data is not correct then the portal
will be closed alarm will sound "intruders".
V. Conclution

 The implemented ETC based system significantly contribute to improve

travel conditions by addressing delay caused by both recurring and
nonrecurring congestion.

 The development of future systems using infrared, radio frequency,

Bluetooth ..

 ETC is very useful include:

 1. Reduce congestion
 2. Save costs
 3. Increased Security
 4. Increased capacity
 5. Convenience great
VI. Future Scope

 This work describes the practical implementation of

Automatic toll Collecting System using Wires and IR.
 Since infrared has very low range, this system work fine only
for small distances.

 The advanced system for the future by using:

 1. radio frequency
 2. via a mobile network GSM / CDMA
 3. SMS / VAS (Value Added Services)
