examine the particle size distribution of soil. The experiment was conducted to determine the percent finer. Its based on the principle of settling the soil grains in water. The soil particles settle in water at different velocities. And it’s assumed that all soil particles are sphere. PROCEDURE 1. Take 50 grams of air-dry well-pulverized soil in a beaker. 2. Prepare a 1000 mL of distilled water and add the soil taken in step 1. Soak it for about 8 hours. 3. Mix the solution well and put the hydrometer (Type 152H) in the graduated cylinder. Record the readings at cumulative times (in min): 0, 4, 8, 15, 30, 60, 120, 240 and 480. For each reading, insert the hydrometer into the cylinder for about 30 seconds before reading is due. The mass of the soil with less than 0.075mm in diameter is 50g. We were not able to standardize the hydrometer, therefore, we assumed that the composite correction is zero. For the diameter and percent finer, the Gs was set to be 2.65 CONCLUSION
Based on the graph, it was concluded that the
sample was well-graded. There are only a little bit deviation in terms of hydrometer analysis.
