The Meaning Of Work
The Meaning of Work
Work: The result of a force moving an object a certain distance
Without movement there is no work
The Formula for Work
300N of force is required to lift a dumbbell.
The dumbbell is moved 50 centimetres
Calculate the amount of work.
If it took 500N of force to lift a wheelbarrow and the
wheelbarrow was moved 6 metres how much work
was performed.
Lever Lab
Method
1. Place the 200g(1.96N) weight to the 12 cm mark on the piece of wood. This
will act as the load.
3. Using the spring scale pull the lever up to 90 degrees on the spot marked
22cm and record the force applied in the table below.
4. Using the spring scale pull the lever up to 90 degrees on the spot marked
32cm and record the force applied in the table below.
5. Using the spring scale pull the lever up to 90 degrees on the spot marked 42
cm and record the force applied in the table below.

Questions
• 1. Did the amount of work change for any of
your three tests or was it roughly the same?
• 2. Explain why the amount of work did/didn’t
change in question 1?
• 3. Did the mechanical advantage change for
any of your three tests? Why?
• 4. Do simple machines actually reduce the
amount of work done? Explain
