What goes into a hospital basement

1. Pharmacy
Reason for locating it in the basement- Critical treatments in hospitals require a large
number of disposable supplies. Everything is provided by the hospital so that the
procedure is smoothly carried out. For that reason, a huge pharmacy is provided in the
basement

2. Accounts Department
Reason for locating it in the basement- A variety of financial disputes can happen between
the patient and the hospital in certain situations. In order to seclude such happenings from
the new patients, the accounts department is provided in the basement

3. Time office
A time office supports various time events mechanisms like in/out, break times, leave
management, shift management, overtime management, reporting etc. via a biometric
attendance system.
4. Changing Room
Reason for locating in the basement- For the purpose of privacy from the patient traffic
and its proximity to time office

5. Kitchen
The kitchen provides clean, hygienic and nutritious
diet for the indoor patient as per their caloric
requirement. It should have access to lorries for
unloading supplies. It has to be given proper
ventilation and smoke exhaust.

7. Laundry-
The laundry services can be in house or outsourced. As a rule
only following items may be cleaned in the laundry
• Hospital patients linen
• Hospital curtains
• Hospital Kitchen linen
• Hospital staff uniforms
• Other authorized items like blankets, mattresses and pillows
Staff personal clothing is not cleaned in the hospital laundry.

8. A/C Plant room-


In the central air conditioning systems there is a plant room where large
compressor, condenser, thermostatic expansion valve and the evaporator are kept
in the large plant room. They perform all the functions as usual similar to a typical
refrigeration system
9. Hot Water Boiler Room-
A drain pipe is provided from the safety valve directly to within 6 inches above the floor.
The room should also be properly ventilated.

10. Mortuary-
A morgue or mortuary (in a hospital or elsewhere)
is used for the storage of human corpses awaiting
identification or removal for autopsy or respectful
burial, cremation or other method. In modern times
corpses have customarily been refrigerated to delay
decomposition. The access to the mortuary should
be secluded and privatised

coming to the hospitals should not see dead bodies in
their way. Also, in case of a financial dispute over the
treatment of a patient who has died during the
treatment, the corpse may be withheld by the hospital
11. Physiotherapy Unit
The essential components of a physiotherapy unit
are- 1) Reception area, 2) Staff Space, 3) Examining
Room, 4) Treatment areas, 5) Toilet facilities, 6)
Storage. Adequate, controlled ventilation is of great
importance in a physiotherapy department.

12. HIS (Hospital Information System) Server


HIS is a comprehensive, integrated information system designed to manage all the
aspects of a hospital's operation, such as medical, administrative, financial, and legal
issues and the corresponding processing of services. With HIS, Doctors can access
easily a patient’s information, test results, and previous prescriptions. Patient
schedule organization and early warning systems can provide by related systems

13. Power Supply


Critical power takes on extra meaning for the healthcare industry. An
interruption or loss of electric power for a hospital is more than a mere
inconvenience or loss of profit; it truly can result in a tragic event.
14. Oxygen Cylinders
Centralized medical gas pipeline system is a vital and
integral part of a modern hospital, with emphasis on
safety, reliability and purity of the gases. The direct piping
method removes obsolete, bulky and dangerous
pressurized cylinders from a patient’s bedside. The
cylinder manifold room for the storage of oxygen is
located in the basement.
15. Security Room
The security room monitors the following security
components- CCTV, Metal and explosive detectors,
Security alarm system, Intrusion detection, etc. This room
functions round the clock under the supervision of
trained personnel.

16. Pump Room- Consists of Raw water tank and Fire Static tank
17. Steam plant- A lot of steam is required to sterilize the equipment
18. Maintenance Room- For the maintenance of the hospital furniture
