Femur Bone Fractures and

Recommendation of appropriate
implants .

Femur
• The femur is the longest and heaviest bone in the body with
tensile strength in 20-40 MPa range.
• The femur consists of
• Superior or proximal
• A shaft (body)
• Inferior or distal end
Literature Survey

Comparison is done between Ti-6Al-4V and Structural Steel implant materials at different
load conditions. At each load both stresses and deformations are evaluated. But the stresses of
both materials are identically equal. When compared with deformation values Ti-6Al-4V
shows less deformation results. hence Ti-6Al-4V is the best material in orthopaedic implant
surgeries

The finite element model was generated, starting from the CT/MRI dataset, using a procedure that
can be summarized by Extraction of the 3D bone model of femur and generation of the finite element

The research suggests, implantation technique, and aftercare are refined, TENs may prove to
be the ideal implant to stabilize many paediatric femur fractures, avoiding the prolonged
immobilization and complications of traction and Spica casting.
Scope of the Project

Scope:
1) Studying different types of fractures.

2) Identifying current treatment methods.

3) Identifying current problems, limitations and inefficiencies of

these treatment methods.
4) Variation in treatment methods for different age groups .

5) Finite Element Analysis of the fractures.

6) Defining and evaluating the best implants for a particular

fracture .

7) Validating the final solution.

Types of Fractures
• Proximal Femur Fractures
 Proximal femur fractures, or hip fractures, involve the upper-most
portion of the thigh bone, just adjacent to the hip joint.
 Further classified into different types of hip fractures
• Femoral Shaft Fractures

 A femoral shaft fracture is a fracture that generally occurs in high-

impact collisions and significant falls.
• Supracondylar Femur Fractures

 A supracondylar femur fracture is an unusual injury to the femur

just above the knee joint.
 These fractures often involve the cartilage surface of the knee joint
and must be treated with this cartilage injury in mind.
Causes of Fracture
Fracture of femur bone is caused by:-

Sudden impact forces

• High energy
• Low energy

Deterioration of bone
• Osteoporosis
• Infection
• Tumour
Types of Treatments
• Traction and bracing
• Open reduction and plating .
• Intramedullary nailing .
• External fixation .
Materials used in Implants
• Stainless steel one-piece femoral stem and head
• Polyethylene (originally Teflon), acetabular
component, both of which were fixed to the bone
using
• PMMA (acrylic) bone cement
• Titanium
Objectives
• Modeling of Femur Bone
• Analyze the fractured femur bone for its
characteristic curves using FEA
• To verify characteristics curve of fractured femur
for best suitable material
