Philippines Legazpi Mission

Elder and Sister Magno
1
What is a Stake Technology Plan?
The Stake Technology Plan is a “document” that identifies:
1. The technologies being used within the stake
2. The technological needs of leaders and members
3. The additional resources available from the Church
4. What the stake would do over the next one to three years to
maximize the use of these technologies

2
Who is Responsible?
The Stake President is primarily responsible in preparing a
“Stake Technology Plan” for their Stake.
Facilities Manager Stake Technology Stake President Stake Physical Assistant Stake
Specialist Facilities Rep Technology Specialist

3
The Technology Specialists
Stake Technology Specialists (or STS) are
stake or district assistant clerks called
by the stake or district presidency to
support effective use of technology in
their stake or district. They must be
worthy Melchizedek priesthood
holders.

Assistant Technology Specialists are

called by the stake or district
presidency. They report to an STS, or to
the stake or district clerk where no STS
is called. They may be assigned to a
ward, building, or specific technology
need. Brothers or sisters ages 12 or
older may be called to serve as
Assistant Technology Specialists

Resources Available
The Church has provided resources to help Technology Specialists in the
performance of their duties, each resource would provide them the necessary
training and expertise they would be needing

mhtech.lds.org
This site provides training, technical resources, policies, and support
information, and is also a good location to learn about Church technology
resources and offerings which your stake might not have implemented
yet. Some examples of content on this site:

• Satellite: schedules, setup, troubleshooting, FAQs, training videos

• Personal Video Conferencing: setup, usage, training videos
• Audio: systems, equipment, backup plans for broadcasts

peers
Other than the CHURCH websites, there are a lot of people that can offer
help to our technology specialist, these people may be a resource:

1. Previous Stake Technology Specialist – the previous STS can be a

source of great knowledge that can help the new or current STS
with the way he can perform his duties
2. Stake Physical Facilities Representative – the stake PFR could act
as a liaison between the current STS and the FMG within the
area
3. Other Stake Technology Specialist – other stake technology
specialists from nearby stakes or districts could also provide
necessary support and assistance
4. Forums – forums from other STS worldwide could be found at
tech.lds.org and could be accessed

7
FMG
The FMG within the area could also provide technical support to the STS,
this could include the following:

1. Training with regards to the use and

maintenance of all technologies installed
within the meetinghouses
2. Repair of defective technologies
3. Replacement of defective technologies
4. Planning for the installation or purchase of
new technologies

8
GSC
For immediate assistance, our STS could also call the GSC (Global Service
Center) for assistance.

STS Responsibilities
The basic overall responsibility is identified in the Meetinghouse Technology
Roles and Responsibilities document, Section 4.2 (under "Policies and
Responsibilities" on mhtech.lds.org):

[The technology specialist] Provides technology support for meetinghouse

products, services, and policies to priesthood leaders, teachers, family
history centers, and mission offices.

By this definition, the expanse of the calling is broad and will continue to
grow as the Church accelerates the use of technology to hasten the work of
salvation. In fact, this calling includes the responsibility of understanding
Church technologies as they develop, and counseling with stake leaders
regarding the use of new or existing technologies within the stake.

The specific responsibilities of assistant technology specialists are

determined by the STS or stake clerk, under the direction of the stake
presidency.

10
STS Key Responsibilities
1. AUDIO - Whether listening to a speaker in sacrament meeting, hearing
the choir sing in broadcast, or viewing media in a lesson, good audio is
key to having a positive experience.

2. BROADCAST - Many Church meetings and presentations are made

available worldwide through various methods. Depending on the
particular event, a broadcast may be available live or rebroadcast via
satellite, local and Internet television, LDS.org, The Mormon Channel
(website, Roku streaming player, and Apple and Android apps), and
archived through the Gospel Library App

3. SATTELITE SYSTEM - This specialized type of broadcast is expected of

most STSs. While the STS is responsible for setting up broadcasts, the
care and maintenance of satellite and video systems belongs to the FM
group

11
STS Key Responsibilities
4. WEBCAST - Webcasts are a specialized form of broadcasting allowing
meetings to be broadcast from one location (usually a stake center) to
one or more additional locations (usually other meetinghouses in the
same stake). These can help reduce travel time and costs, and
increased participation for important meetings such as stake or
regional conferences, firesides, and training meetings.

5. INTERNET ACCESS - Internet access has become an important

component and is the backbone of meetinghouse technology. When
set up correctly, it can provide safer, filtered access for leaders and
members and limit exposure to internet attacks and inappropriate
content.

6. COMPUTERS - Computers are purchased by the FM group with FM

group funds. The STS is responsible for installation of computers and
software, and for training/help/support and other issues.
12
STS Key Responsibilities
7. PRINTERS AND COPIERS - As with most electronics, printers and copiers
are becoming more capable and less expensive with each replacement
cycle. They should, however, continue to be used until there is a
demonstrated need to be replaced.

8. VIDEOS AND OTHER MEDIA - The Church has produced and continues
to produce wonderful videos and other media, providing powerful
resources for hastening the work and strengthening testimonies.
Technology specialists can play a key role in helping leaders, teachers,
and members put these resources to work.

9. PROVIDE OTHERS WITH TRAINING - The STS “trains clerks, priesthood

leaders, teachers, and others (as directed) on meetinghouse
technology” and provides several possible topics.

13
STS Key Responsibilities
10. PROTECT CHURCH RESOURCES - Worldwide, the Church invests
significant amounts of sacred tithing funds into technology to help
further the Lord’s work. Technology specialists have an important role
and stewardship in protecting those investments, maximizing their
value, and making wise spending decisions

11. TECHNOLOGY AWARENESS - Through your interactions with

equipment, clerks, librarians, leaders, teachers, and members, you are
uniquely positioned to understand the technology needs, issues,
successes, and frustrations of the stake.
