 MODE

Method 1 : Graphical method

The mode can be estimated by using the point of

intersection of AC and BD as shown above where
AEFD is the modal class.
Step 1: Mark four points A, B, C and D
on the modal class bar as shown above.
Step 2: Connect with lines from A to C
and B to D.
Step 3: Find the point of intersection
of the lines AC and BD. That is the
estimated mode of the data.
Based on our histogram, the mode is 22.
Method 2 : Calculation
method

L = lower boundary of the modal class

f 1 = frequency of the modal class

minus frequency of the previous class

f 2 = frequency of the modal class

minus frequency of the previous class

C = width of the modal class
 Modal class = 21 - 30
 L = 20.5
 f 1 = 18 -14 = 4
 f 2 = 18 – 4 = 14
 C = 29.5 – 20.5 = 10

 =
 = 22. 72

Median

 L= Lower Boundary of the class in which

the median lies
N= Total Frequency

F = Cumulative frequency before the class

in which the median lies

C = Size of the class in which the median

lies
 = Frequency of the class in which the
median lies

Total frequency, N = 60
Hence, the median is the 30th which

lies in the class 21-30

Lower boundary of the class, L = 20.5

Cumulative frequency before the class,

F = 28
Frequency of the class, = 18
Size of the class, C = 10

Conclusio

n

From the histogram, we can easily find out that
the mode of the IPGM students total expenditure on
drinks in a month’s is RM 22. The amount is considered
as average.

But, there are s a slightly different between the
mode from the histogram and the mode we calculated
by formulae. The mode from the histogram is 22 while
the answer that we have calculated is 22.72. The
answer is very close to each other. Thus, we can choose
either graphical or calculation method to find the mode.
But as we all know, by using any one of these methods,
we also need to draw a histogram.

From the histogram we can also find out the
frequency if the expenditure on drinks of IPGM
students averagely spent every month which is
around RM21-30.

From the data we collected, we have find out
the mean, median and the modal class. The mean is
24.22 while the median is 21.61.

On the other hand, the qualitative data we
have collected show that most of the IPGM prefer
soft drink if compared with the others. But there
frequency of students who like to drink soft drink is
only slightly difference with the Twister Juice and
also Milo/Nescafe.

As a conclusion, we can say that
the total expenditure on drinks of
IPGM students is around RM 21-30.
This may because they are those who
prefer to drink soft drink then others,
and drinking soft drink will not be good
for their health. So they cannot buy it
often.
