Pistons
It is basically a mechanical part, that converts
chemical energy from fuel into mechanical energy
while reciprocating in the cylinder and transferring the
energy to crankshaft through connecting rod.
They are made up of Aluminum Alloys.
Piston Nomenclature
Types of Pistons
1. Trunk Pistons
2. Slipper Pistons
3. Crosshead Pistons
4. Deflector Pistons
Piston Manufacturing Process

2 Basic Processes are:-

 Casting:- It is a process in which molten material is

poured directly into a mould and allowed to silidify
then the “casting” is ejected or broken out of the
mould.

 Forging or commonly known as Die Casting:- It is a

process in which heated metal is forced with the
help of a Die to attain required shape
Manufacturing Differences
Piston Rings
Piston rings seal the combustion chamber,
transferring heat to the cylinder wall and controlling
oil consumption. They are made up of Cast Iron.

Types
• Compression Ring:-
The main function of it is to seal the combustion
chamber and transfer the heat from piston to cylinder

• Oil Ring:-
Oil rings distribute and regulate oil within the cylinder
wall and help scrape it back into the crankcase. This is
necessary to keep the cylinder wall lubricated with the
cooler replacement oil, thereby aiding the heat transfer
and lowering the friction between the piston and the
cylinder.
Piston Rings
Engine Valves
It is mechanical element which is used to admit
fresh air and exhaust the burnt gases. They are
made up of an alloy called “Silchrome 1” that
contains 8.5 percent chromium

Types
• Inlet Valves:- Its function is to admit the fresh air
and fuel mixture in the engine cylinder
• Outlet valve:- Its function is to exhaust burnt gases
out of the cylinder
