Airway
In the unconscious baby airway
obstruction is usually due to
loss of pharyngeal tone
not
foreign material in the airway
i.e. Position not suction

Newborn Life Support

Inflation breaths

Five breaths,
each sustained for 2-3 seconds
at 30 cms of water pressure

RC (UK)
NLS Resus 16
Newborn Life Support

Inflation breaths
The heart rate will usually respond
to lung inflation

If there is no heart rate response

check for chest movement

RC (UK)
NLS Resus 17
Newborn Life Support

Mask inflation is
nearly always effective

Only about 1 in 500

appear to need intubation

RC (UK) NLS Resus 18

Newborn Life Support

About 95% of babies

for whom help is called
will recover within a minute or two
once air enters the lungs

Newborn Life Support

Reassess
If the heart rate is slow
and not improving

Consider chest compressions

RC (UK)
NLS Resus 22
Newborn Life Support

Chest compressions
If the chest is not moving
it is not being inflated
Check A & B
Do not start chest compressions
until the chest is being inflated

NLS Resus 23
Newborn Life Support

Chest compressions

You want to move oxygenated blood

from the lungs to the coronary arteries

Its not that far and won’t take long

RC (UK)
NLS Resus 24
Newborn Life Support

Reassess
Has the heart rate improved ?
No ?
Check airway
Check chest movement
Check compressions
RC (UK)
NLS Resus 25

Consider drugs

• Sodium bicarbonate
• Adrenaline
• Dextrose
