What is Reading?
• Reading - active process of understanding print and graphic texts.
• Cohen (1990) - mental processes that readers consciously select
to use to complete reading tasks successfully.

• Walker (2000) – ‘active process in which readers shift between


sources of information, elaborate meaning and strategies, monitor their
comprehension, and use the social context to reflect their response’.

• Reading is important …

For use in personal life, school life, academic life, work life.
It is the ONE skill we use every day without fail.

READING is VITAL for SUCCESS in any FIELD.


Even Science and Maths require effective Reading.
What is Reading Literacy?
PISA 2018 Reading Literacy (OECD)
 Reading literacy is understanding, using,
evaluating, reflecting on and engaging with
texts in order to achieve one’s goals, to
develop one’s knowledge and potential and
to participate in society.
 RL has a much broader context than just
reading. Reading literacy encompasses
application, judgement and contemplation
of what is read in order to use the information
for personal and professional progress as well
as for the benefit of society.

PISA & MALAYSIAN CONTEXT
 PISA or Programme for International Student Assessment
is an initiative by the Organisation For Economic
Cooperation And Development (OECD); administered every
three years.
 It measures how far students approaching the end of
compulsory education have acquired some of the knowledge
and skills essential for full participation in a knowledge
society.
 As stated in the Education Blueprint, Malaysia aims to be in
the top one- third in the world as far as education is
concerned, assessments such as PISA is the best way to
monitor progress and gauge our success.
Malaysia in PISA 2012
 Placed 59 out of 74 participating countries
 One- third lowest result overall
 Score of 398 for Reading Literacy
(Scored 414 in 2009)
 Below OECD average of 496 for 2012
 52.5 % of students failed to achieve Level 2
which OECD has deemed the minimum level
necessary to enter adult life and become an
active member of society.

Reading Strategies
 Baker & Boonkit (2004) - Reading strategies
was defined () as “techniques and methods
readers use to make their reading successful”
(p. 302).
 Janzen (2003) - defined as plans and
behaviours for solving problems when faced
in constructing meaning (Janzen, 2003).
 Applying the appropriate Reading Strategy is
necessary in order to attain meaning in
context and subsequently to achieve
Reading Literacy as measured by PISA.
Text & Reading
 Different types of text requires
different reading strategies.
 The strategies that you use
generally depend on two things:
 Your purpose for reading
 Whether you’re reading fiction
or nonfiction
Summary
 Reading is an active and conscious
mental process.
 Reading strategies are methods and
techniques used for successful reading.
 Readers must select information, monitor,
reflect and revise choices made during
reading to achieve meaning i.e.
metacognition.
 Successful reading requires planning and
behaviours that involve problem solving
i.e. HOTs.

 A programme developed by CDD to improve
the teaching and learning of reading.
 HEBAT- Hayati, Eksplorasi Berfikir Aras Tinggi
 Bahan Sumber HEBAT Bacaan Bahasa Inggeris
is the prescribed resource material for English
teachers teaching lower forms.
 Teachers can adopt to use material provided
as is or adapt ideas in the reading units to
different text/theme as suitable to their
situations.
