Objective
To compare three different interventions for scabies
control;

Standard care involving the administration of Permethrin to affected

person (standard care group)

Mass administration of Permethrin (permethrin group)

Mass administration of Ivermectin (Ivermectin group)

Time and Place

Fiiji

September 2012 - September 2013

Research Design
• Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial
PICO
Problems
• Scabies Control in a Population with Endemic Disease

Intervention
• mass drug administration of permethrin or ivermectin

Comparison
• administration of permethrin to affected persons and their contacts

Outcome
• Mass drug administration, particularly the administration of
ivermectin, was efficacious for the control of scabies and impetigo
Methodes
• Inclusion of the study group (3 islands) were based on;
- Basis of relative isolation
- Population size (small enough to be manageable, but large
enough to provide study power)
- Cultural similarities
• Inclusion of the sample;
- Every residents who were invited by letter to participate &
visited by the local district nurse
- Residents who present on the baseline visit, 3 month visit
and 12 month visit
• Exclusion of the sample;
-Residents who were absent in the community since
enrollment
Intervention

the administration of
permethrin to affected
persons and their contacts
(standard-care group)

mass administration of
three island
permethrin
communities in Fiji
(permethrin group)

mass administration of
ivermectin (ivermectin
group).
Outcomes
Results
Conclusions
• Mass drug administration, particularly the
administration of ivermectin, was efficacious for
the control of scabies and impetigo.
Recommendation
• Approaches to mass drug administration of
Ivermectin to control Scabies may yield better
results if they are integrated across diseases in a
way that is acceptable to individual persons and
communities.
