OXIDATION OF FATTY ACIDS

Sources of Fatty Acid

 Mainly from Lipolysis

 From degradation of Chylomicrons

 Some minute quantity from Liver

Methods of Oxidation
 β- oxidation – Principal method of Oxidation
 α- oxidation
 ω- oxidation and
 Peroxisomal oxidation
Beta Oxidation – Knoop’s Exp
 According to his Exp FA are oxidised by the
removal of 2 carbon atoms at a time.
 The carbon atom next to COOH group is
attacked by the formation of ketoacid
 One molecule of Acetyl CoA is released
Major organs involved
 Liver
 Kidney
 Heart (80% of Energy is derived from FA)
 Adipose Tissue
 Testis
 Brain and
 Lungs
Enzymes of FA oxidation
 Present in the Mitochondrial Matrix

 Collectively called as FA Oxidase

 Converts Fatty acid to Acetyl CoA

Carnitine
 Chemically Beta-OH-Gamma - trimethyl
ammonium butyrate
 Also called as Vitamin BT

 Acts as Ferry-Boat in carrying FA

Steps of Oxidation
 Dehydrogenation
 Hydration
 Dehydrogenation
 Thiolytic cleavage
