What is EndNote?

 EndNote is a commercial reference management


software package, used to manage bibliographies and
references when writing essays and articles and it
designed to allow researchers to record, organize, and
use references found when searching literature for
information. It is produced by Thomson Reuters.
 EndNote is an annotation placed at the end of a
document.

What can EndNote do?

 Create a database (library) of references for a


specific topic
 Download references from library catalogs or other
electronic databases
 Link references into word processed documents
 Generate bibliographies in specific styles,
especially for publication

What can Install EndNote?

 Follow the same procedures for any software


installation in computer.
 Many versions of EndNote software are available
but the most modernize is EndNote X7.
 If the software has crack you must follow the crack
file instructions.
 If the software successfully installed then you can
Run it.

How do I run EndNote?

 Either double select the EndNote icon from the Start --


Programs menu
or

 Open Word and select Tools -- Go to EndNote

Name your new library and save it to
the desired folder, eg:
c:\MyDocuments\dissertation\

In Word,
select Tools -- EndNote to start

Then select File -- New

Your new library will open, ready to accept references

To open an existing library select File -- Open

Libraries in the Examples folder & your most


recently created libraries will be displayed

Select Open Library to find files stored in other


locations, eg: a:\drive

Adding records to a library

There are three ways to enter references into


EndNote :
 Typing by hand

 Downloading from a database and importing

 Searching and downloading directly through


EndNote using Connection Files (v.6 + only)

Adding records to a library by Import

 An alternative to entering records in manually, is to


use a database of your choice, search, then save
the database records in a format Endnote is able to
read

 These records can then be imported into an


Endnote library through an appropriate filter

Backing up EndNote Libraries

 EndNote libraries need to be backed up for


obvious reasons

 Select Save a Copy from the File menu and save


a copy of the library to an appropriate location

Inserting In-text Citations with Word

 Open the Word document in which you wish to


insert references

 Place the cursor where the citation is to be


inserted

 Go to the EndNote library and highlight the


appropriate reference
 This method citations called Cite While You
Write (CWYW)

To insert a reference from within
EndNote, highlight the reference and click
on Insert Citation

To insert multiple citations, place the cursor in the Word
document
In EndNote, highlight records by holding the Ctrl key, clicking on
the appropriate citations, and then Insert Citation

Formatting a bibliography

 Once the document is written, the bibliography


can be formatted in a chosen style

 In EndNote:
– click on Cite While You Write -- Format Bibliography
 In Word:
– click on Tools – EndNote -- Format Bibliography

To change the citation style,
select File -- Output Styles and
select the style of choice

Use Style Manager to select a


style that is not currently
displayed

Once you have selected the style,
click on Cite While You Write --
Format Bibliography in EndNote

style for the document

key, click on records
you want to print

Traveling Library

CAVEAT 2: The Traveling Library does not contain Notes,


Abstract, Keywords, etc.
