QUESTION 1
What is the name of the quality award held annually in our country
and how does it differ from the Malcolm Baldridge award of USA
and EFQM?
There are several quality awards held annually in Malaysia by Ministry of International Trade
and Industry (MITI) such as Prime Minister’s Quality Award (now called as Prime Minister’s
Innovation Award (AIPM) since 2010) for public sector [1] and Quality Management
Excellence Award (QMEA) for private sector [2] which both categories under Industry
Excellence Awards (AKI) [3].

However, for now QMEA is the main quality award in Malaysia that give recognition to
companies/organizations with an excellent quality management practices in their day to day
operations. As for AIPM, it is the most prestigious and unique public service award to
recognize innovations that are significant and bring high impact to the country.

QMEA is the award programme that was first established in 1990 based on the
organizational excellence framework which is in 2011 the award programmes are based on
Business Excellence Framework (BEF). The BEF elements is to attain excellence and serve as
guidance for organizations to enhance their company’s performance.

1. AWARD HISTORY
Quality Management Excellence Award (QMEA)
1.Award programme that was first established in 1990 by MITI under Industry Excellence Award.
2.Based on the organizational excellence framework which is in 2011 the award programmes are based
on Business Excellence Framework (BEF).The BEF elements is to attain excellence and serve as guidance
for organizations to enhance their company’s performance.
3.Managed by The Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC).
4.Recognizes local private sector and MNC base on their annual sales turn over.

Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award (MBNQA)


1.Established by the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Improvement Act of 1987.
2.Award was named after President Reagan’s secretary of commerce
3.Managed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
4.Recognizes U.S. organizations in the business, health care, education, and nonprofit sectors (private
and public sectors).

European Quality Award (EFQM)


1.Founded in 1989 and in Oct 1991 the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM)
partnership with European Commission and the European Organization for Quality announced the
European Quality Award (now called the European Excellence Award).
2. Managed by EFQM as nonprofit organization
3.Recognizes internal communications to public relations, as well as a wide range of industries from all
across Europe, the Awards explore the full range of the profession, and provide a comprehensive look
at the most exceptional examples of communication in Europe.
1. AWARD HISTORY
Anugerah Kecemerlangan Industri (AKI)
1. Introduced by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) in 1991
2. In 2012, the AKI underwent a rebranding process to review its concept; award categories; the
evaluation and assessment procedures; as well as the incentives for winners.
3.AKI returns in 2014 with several new and improved features, with using the Business Excellence
Framework (BEF) as the benchmark criteria in the evaluation process.
4. The AKI 2014 is managed by the AKI Council which is appointed by MITI for a two-year term.

Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award (MBNQA)


1.Established by the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Improvement Act of 1987.

6. AWARD INCENTIVES
QMEA:
1. A trophy and a certificate.
2. Eligible to use logo of the award for publicity purposes for three (3) consecutive years from the date of receiving the award.
3. Fee exemption from the total participation fee of RM19,500 for three (3) international trade fairs OR RM1,500 for three (3)
trade missions organised by MATRADE. This incentives must be utilised within three (3) years of receiving the award.
4. Fee exemption from the participation fee for exhibition space at the Malaysia Export Exhibition Centre (MEEC) at the MATRADE
Headquarters and Malaysia Trade Centre Dubai, UAE for one (1) exhibition session. The incentive must be utilised within three (3)
years of receiving the award.
5. Fee publicity given by MATRADE offices overseas on the profile of the company together with its products and services.
6. Featured in MATRADE`s publication and space to advertise company`s product/ services in MATRADE`s export directory.
7. 20% discount on any programme organised by MPC.
8. For SME Winners a package worth RM20,000 for training organised by MPC, based on published rate of the programme. The
incentives must be utilised within three (3) years of receiving the award.
9.Company`s profile and its products/services will be featured in the websites of MITI, MPC, MATRADE and SIRIM.
10. Winners will be advertised in newspaper.
11. Priority given for SMIDEC grants.
12.Winners for QMEA will be nominated for Prime Minister Industry Excellence Award for the particular year.

Do you think this award has helped to boost up Malaysia’s


overall performance on quality?
Quality Management Excellence Award (QMEA) has helped to boost up
Malaysia’s overall performance on quality. This is proven by the improvement
and contribution by the award recipients for example Samsung Electronics
Display (M) Sdn Bhd winning the Industry Excellence Awards 2008's Quality
Management Excellence Award for its exceptional achievements in top
management leadership, customer focus and HR management [7]. In 2009,
PHN Industry Sdn Bhd winning the award and again in 2014 they still manage
to win category 1 for manufacturing [8]. All in all, it shows that the QMEA
really helping stimulate companies to improve quality and productivity for the
pride of recognition while obtaining a competitive edge through increased
profits.
