The fall of the Roman
Empire
The roman Empire lasted for more than a thousand
years. Over time, however, the empire began to grow
weak.
There were many reasons this happened:
Some emperor were cruel and dishonest.
Warriors from the north attacked the borders of the
empire.
In A.D. 476, warriors finally captured the city of
Rome. The mighty Roman Empire had come to an end.
THE EARLY MIDDLE AGES
The years between the fall of Rome and A.D. 1500
are now called the Middle Ages.
This means they are a time “in between”. Before
the Middle Ages, there were the civilizations of
Greece and Rome. After the Middle Ages, modern
nations existed.
The early middle ages were the hardest for people.
Many leaders fought one another for power
and land.
The signs of civilization that Rome had
brought to Europe began to crumble away.
The rise of Feudalism
It was a system that developed to bring
order to Europe. It was also a way of
life.
Under feudalism, powerful people
agreed to protect those who were less
powerful.
This chart shows how Feudalism worked:

The Feudalism System

Christianity in the Middle Ages
A small church was an important part of each manor.
At this time, all Christians were members of the Roman
Catholic Church.
The Church replace the power of Rome as something
that kept people together.
The Church saved education for completely
desappearing after the fall of Rome.
Christian priest learned to read and write
Latin, which became the language of the
church. They taught others how to read and
write.

The Crusades
During the Middle Ages some Christians
made a long, difficult journey. They went to
visit Jerusalem.
In the Middle Ages, Jerusalem was ruled by
people named Muslims, because they
followed a religion called Islam.
The pope was the leader of the Roman Catholic
Church. He said it was their duty to free Jerusalem
from the power of the Muslims.
The Christians went on several journeys to try to
capture Jerusalem. These journeys were called the
Crusades.
The Christians fought battles with the Muslims and
capture the city of Jerusalem in 1099. But, about
100 years later, theMuslims won it back.
THE REFORMATION
In 1517, a movement begun by Luther became
known as the Reformation.
Luther was a monk, who had developed some new
ideas about Christianity.
He was angry at the Roman Catholic Church, because
the pope would forgive people for their mistakes if
they gave money to the church. Luther thought this
was wrong.
Some people thought he was right.
Luther left the Roman Catholic Church in 1520.
Many people followed him. Luther’s followers
became known as Protestants. This is because they
“protested” against Roman Catholic Church.
A NEW EUROPE
During the 1500s and 1600s, more people began to think of
themselves not as serf or the citizens of a town. They began
to thinks of themselves as members of a nation.
A nation is a large group of people who share the same
language, history, government, and culture.
