Analysis of the data
Year: 1974 1981 1991 2001 2011
Population: 71,479 87,120 106,313 124,355 142,319
(thousand)

By analyzing the data followings can be mentioned-

 The data is in unequal interval. Though, generally census occurred after an equal
interval of 10 years but here the interval between 1974 to 1981 is 7.
 The cause of that, in 1971 there was liberation war in Bangladesh. That is
why the census of that year couldn’t be happened.
 The first census of Bangladesh occurred in 1974. For this, the chart starts
from 1974.
 From the census it is worth noting that the population is increasing drastically.
What to find?

 From the population census of Bangladesh we have to

find-

1.The population of the year of 1995

2.The population of the year of 2005
Method of analysis

 Since the unknown data should have to find out by the process of
interpolation, from unequal interval there is two method to find out the
unknown data -

1 • Lagrange's Interpolation Formula

2 •Newton’s Divided Difference Formula

Lagrange’s Interpolation Formula
Lagrange’s interpolation formula for unequal interval:
( x  x1 )( x  x2 )  ( x  xn )
f ( x)  f ( x0 )
( x0  x1 )( x0  x2 )...( x0  xn )
( x  x0 )( x  x2 )  ( x  xn )
 f ( x1 )  
( x1  x0 )( x1  x2 )...( x1  xn )
( x  x0 )( x  x1 )  ( x  xn 1 )
 f ( xn )
( xn  x0 )( xn  x1 )...( xn  xn 1 )
Here, 𝑥 = 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑢𝑛𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤𝑛 𝑦𝑒𝑎𝑟.
𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑃𝑜𝑝𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑢𝑛𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤𝑛 𝑦𝑒𝑎𝑟.
𝑥0, 𝑥1 , 𝑥2 … … 𝑥𝑛 𝑟𝑒𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑔𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑛 𝑦𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑
𝑓 𝑥0 , 𝑓 𝑥1 , 𝑓 𝑥2 … … 𝑓 𝑥𝑛 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑜𝑝𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡
𝑦𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑠 𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑦.
Newton’s Divided Difference
Interpolation Formula
Newton’s Divided Difference Interpolation Formula for unequal interval:
f ( x)  f ( x0 )  ( x  x0 ) f ( x0 , x1 )  ( x  x0 )( x  x1 ) f ( x0 , x1 , x2 ) 
  ( x  x0 )( x  x1 )  ( x  xn1 ) f ( x0 , x1 , x 2 ,, xn )

Here, 𝑥 = 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑢𝑛𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤𝑛 𝑦𝑒𝑎𝑟.

𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑃𝑜𝑝𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑢𝑛𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤𝑛 𝑦𝑒𝑎𝑟.
𝑥0, 𝑥1 , 𝑥2 … … 𝑥𝑛 𝑟𝑒𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑔𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑛 𝑦𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑠.
𝑓(𝑥0 , 𝑥1 , 𝑥2 … … 𝑥𝑛 ) 𝑟𝑒𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑑𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑑 𝑑𝑖𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒.
𝑓 𝑥𝑛−1 − 𝑓(𝑥𝑛 )
𝐷𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑑 𝑑𝑖𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒, ∆𝑓 𝑥 =
𝑥𝑛−1 − 𝑥𝑛
