I. Background
Keywords
II. Purpose of study

• To investigate the effect of sustained loads on the shear

strength of reinforced concrete (RC) slender beam without
stirrups.
• To apply the different loading rates such as 100 times slower
and 1000 times slower that normal loading rate instead of
constant sustained loads.
III. Experimental Method
 8 slender beams with same
geometry and cross section.

320 mm
- Shear span to effective depth
a/d = 3
- Tension reinforcement ratio:
ρs=0.8% L=2300 mm 200 mm

Very Slow
loading rate

• N-D : Under normal loading rate until failure.

• S-L060 : Slow loading rate is applied after the beam is loaded until 60kN of normal loading rate .
• VS-L120 : Very slow loading rate is applied after the beam is loaded until 120kN of normal loading rate .
IV. Result and Discussion

• Shear strength is almost constant during the occurrence of significant diagonal

cracking.
• But slightly increase at failure.
• Reduction factor for shear strength of RC slender under sustained loads is not
required in design practice.
IV. Result and Discussion
• The increase ultimate load under slow and very slow loading rate might due to the
increase contribution of aggregate interlock as the more branched cracks occurs
around the diagonal crack.
• This could compensate for the negative effects caused by creep of the concrete.
