expressions
Competency:

• The learner explains the definition, importance and examples of


idiomatic expressions.
• The learner uses appropriate idiomatic expressions in a variety
of basic interpersonal communicative situations.
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. Determine the different idiomatic expressions and their
meanings.
2. Draw out the meanings of expressions and how
these can help in effective communication with others.
3. Appreciate the significance of idiomatic expressions in real-life
context.
Idiomatic Expressions
• Also known as idioms; are words, phrases or expressions which
are commonly used in everyday conversation by native speakers of
English and usually figurative.
• This meaning is different from the literal meaning of the idiom’s
individual elements. In other words, idioms don’t mean exactly
what the words say. They have, however, hidden meaning.
Examples:
• Apple of someone’s eye
- it means someone’s favorite

Ex: There is nothing I don’t like about you because you will
always be the apple of my eye.
Raining cats and dogs
-heavy
rain or
downpour

Ex: Do not go outside, it’s raining cats and dogs!


Butterflies in my stomach
• To be nervous or anxious about
something.

Ex: As soon as my name was called to give the speech, I


felt butterflies in my stomach.
Easy as Pie
• Very easy

Ex: I already finished answering the exam, it was just as


easy as a pie.
Zip your lip
• Remain silent
• Keep quiet

Ex: If you have nothing good to say, just zip your lip.
