What is Astronomy?
Astronomy is a natural science that deals with the
Study of celestial objects (such as stars, planets, comets,
star clusters and galaxies) and
Phenomena that originate outside the Earth's
atmosphere (such as the cosmic background radiation).
Astronomy is concerned with the
evolution,
physics,
chemistry,
meteorology, and
motion of celestial objects, as well as the formation and
development of the universe.
Astronomy = astros (stars) + nomos (law or culture),
i.e. “law of stars”.
Types of Astronomy
Broad Classification
Observational Astronomy
Theoretical Astronomy
Observational Astronomy
Radio astronomy
Infrared astronomy
Optical astronomy
Ultraviolet astronomy
X-ray astronomy
Theoretical Astronomy : Theoretical astronomers use a wide
variety of tools which include
Analytical models of a process are generally better for giving insight
into the heart of what is going on computational numerical
simulations.
Numerical models can reveal the existence of phenomena and
effects that would otherwise not be seen.
Specific Classification
 Solar astronomy
Sun is the most frequently studied star
It is at a distance of eight light minutes from earth.
Its luminosity has increased upto 40% till date.
This increasing luminosity can have a significant impact
on earth
Stellar astronomy
The study of stars and stellar evolution is fundamental
to our understanding of the universe.
Star formation occurs in dense region of dust and gas.
Starting mass of a star affects its main features such as
luminosity e.g. more the mass, more is the luminosity of
the star.
 Planetary science
Examines the assemblage of planets, moons, dwarf planets,
comets, asteroids, and other bodies orbiting the Sun.
Solar system is divided into
 Inner terrestrial planets- Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars
 Asteroid belt
 Outer gas giant planets- Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
Galactic astronomy
Our solar system orbits within the Milky Way, a spiral galaxy.
It is a rotating mass of gas, dust, stars and other objects, held
together by mutual gravitational attraction.
Earth is located in its dusty outer arms.
It consist of
 Core at the center having a massive black hole in its center.
 Four arms that spiral from the core
Extragalactic astronomy
 Study of objects outside our galaxy is a branch of
astronomy concerned with the
 formation and evolution of Galaxies;
 their morphology and classification; and
 the examination of active galaxies, and the groups and clusters

of galaxies
Cosmology
 Cosmology could be considered the study of the universe as a
whole.
 physical cosmology has provided a deep understanding of the

formation and evolution of the cosmos.

 Fundamental to the structure of the universe is the existence

of dark matter and dark energy, forming 96% of the mass of

the universe.
Artificial Satellites
A satellite is an object which has been placed into orbit
by human endeavor.
Sputnik-1 was the first artificial satellite launched by
Soviet Union on 4th Oct, 1957.
First Indian satellite was Aryabhatta which was
launched on 19th April, 1975.
Artificial satellites are of many types such as
Astronomical Satellites
Biosatellite
Communication satellites
Navigational satellites
Weather satellites etc.
Weather forecasting

Weather forecasting is the application of science and

technology to predict the state of the atmosphere for a
future time and a given location.
data from weather satellites is used as weather warnings
as important forecasts because they are used to protect
life and property.
Forecasts based on temperature and precipitation are
important to agriculture, and therefore to traders within
commodity markets.
Since outdoor activities are severely curtailed by heavy
rain, snow and the wind chill, forecasts can be used to
plan activities.
Astronomy in Tourism
Astronomy in tourism has all of a sudden boosted up
the space tourism.
Space tourism is the recent phenomenon in which
wealthy individuals or corporations are spending a lot
to travel in the space.
Unfortunately space tourism has been criticized as
being a "playground for the rich."
The vision for the future is to make space tourism
affordable and available to the middle class in just a few,
short years.
Dennis tito was the first space tourist.
