 BACKGROUND
 DFU mainly caused by ischemic, neuropathic or combined neuroischemic abnormalities
 Diabetic Foot Ulcer (DFU) is the most costly and devastating complication of diabetes mellitus which can lead to
infection, gangrene, amputation, and even death if the necessary care is not provided.
 DFU remain unhealed after 12 weeks of treatment
 Treatable cases healing occurs in 2 to 5 months
 Some of herbal products provide accelerated healing and decrease the rate of recurrent ulcer ; radix astragali,
radix rehmanniae, aloe vera, tangzu yuyang ointment, propolis + olive il, ozonated oil ointment
 BACKGROUND
 Based on National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) strategies, the management should be
done with a multidisciplinary team that consists of a general practitioner, a nurse, an educator, an orthotic
specialist, a podiatrist, and consultations with other specialists such as vascular surgeons, infectious disease
specialists, dermatologists, endocrinologists, dieticians, and orthopedic specialists.
 PURPOSE

 Aimed to assess the effects of topical olive oil on the healing of DFU
 METHOD
 Study : Double-blind randomized clinical trial
 Sample : Thirty-four patients with DFU of Wagner’s ulcer grade 1 or 2 were enrolled in this study. Patients who
were randomly assigned to intervention group received topical olive oil in addition to routine cares, whereas
patients in control group just received routine cares.
 Location : Diabetes Clinic of Ahvaz Golestan hospital, Iran,
 Periode : 2014 - 2015
Inclusion Exclusion

 Age of 30-65  Patients with foot gangrene that needed

 BMI of 18-35 amputation as well as osteomyelitis that needed
antibiotic therapy
 Foot ulcer with grade 1&2 of Wagener’s classification
on toes, soles, heels or dorsum of the feet which  Patients who preferred to receive the treatment
remained open without healing and had not shown out of the study
improvement for more than 3 months
 Missing follow up more than twice
 Lack of history of addiction and cigarette and alcohol
 Patients desire to withdraw in each phase
abuse
 Lack of participation in any diabetes education and
food preventive education
 Not receiving any drugs which may interact with the
study (glucocorticoids, cytotoxic drugs,
immunosuppressive)
 Free from any chronic disease
